Centre for Engineering Research (CER)
The Centre for Engineering Research (CER) delivers excellent research and high-quality innovation where original ideas, fundamental and applied knowledge push and continue to develop the frontiers of engineering science in both outputs and impact.
Research at CER cuts across multiple disciplines drawing together more than 70 academic and research staff and over 26 PhD and EngD students from material and manufacturing, civil engineering, aeronautical and mechanical engineering and their associated disciplines.
CER's research focus is on:
- Innovative materials (from aviation fluids and machinery coatings to construction materials);
- Structural performance of components (from aerospace structures to built environment);
- Fluid structure interaction (from airplane wings and cars to large civil infrastructure);
- Theory and modelling (from materials behaviour to energy and thermofluids applications);
- Digital systems (from manufacturing optimisation to digital twins and Building Information Modelling);
- Sustainability and clean growth (from clean energy to upcycling solutions).

Dr Antonios Kanellopoulos
Centre Director
Dr Kanellopoulos is a Reader (Associate Professor) in Innovative Construction Materials at the School of Physics, Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Hertfordshire. His research focuses on innovative solutions for construction materials ranging from upcycling mineral wastes for sustainable circular solutions to metamaterials unique functionalities for the future built environment.
He is chartered engineer (CEng), chartered scientist (CSci), a member of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining, a member of the Institute of Concrete Technology, a senior member of RILEM and Fellow of Higher Education Academy.
