Commuting
As a commuting student, we want you to make the most of your time on campus and feel part of the Herts community. We provide social spaces for you to relax in, offer a wide variety of sports clubs and societies you can join, and ensure there are great transport links - so you can join in on campus without worrying about how you'll get home.
Travel
The University benefits from direct travel links to North London as well as towns and villages in Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire. Both campuses are easily accessible by train, road and bus. You can find details on our Ask Herts travelling to campus page.
The University has its own bus company, Uno. Uno runs local buses throughout Hertfordshire and into North London. Discounted tickets are available for staff and students. You must show your ID card to get the discounted rate.
Common routes are:
- 341 Hatfield - Broxbourne
- 601 Borehamwood - Welwyn Garden City
- 602 Hatfield - Watford
- 610 Enfield/Cockfosters – Luton

We also run the University shuttle. It is a free service between The Forum on College Lane campus and de Havilland campus. Hatfield is also served by busses from Arriva and Centrebus, and coaches from National Express.
If travelling by car, the University campuses are close to junction 3 of the A1(M) and signposted. The postcode for sat nav use is:
AL10 9AB for College Lane campus
AL10 9EU for de Havilland campus
There are fast and frequent trains from London Kings Cross to Hatfield train station and from London St Pancras to St Albans train station, directions can be found using the National Rail Journey Planner.
Buses run frequently to both campuses from Hatfield and St Albans stations.
To/from Hatfield station:
- 653 is the most frequent service from the station to College Lane campus (the Forum) and then on to the de Havilland campus
- 614 stops at College Lane campus (the Forum) and de Havilland campus
- 602 stops at College Lane campus (the Forum) and de Havilland campus
Hatfield Railway station is a 30 minute walk or 10 minute bike ride to either College Lane or de Havilland campus. There is a regular bus service provided by Uno Bus. The 341, 601, 602, 614, 641, 644 and 653 busses link our campuses to the Railway Station.
To/from St Albans station:
- 602 stops at College lane campus (the Forum) and de Havilland campus
- 601 stops at de Havilland
Societies
Societies are a great way to meet like-minded people with many putting on social events and activities during the day so commuting students can attend. There are more than 100 societies for you to get involved with during your time at Herts. From salsa dancing to baking and LGBT to K-pop, you will find your place.

Social spaces
We have plenty of social spaces to relax or study in between your lectures and seminars. You can choose from a wide variety of cafes, restaurants and breakout areas on campus, ideal for catching up with friends, completing group work or having a quiet moment to yourself. If you want to head off campus, the Galleria is a short walk away and is filled with shops, restaurants and cafes with local parks offering plenty of green space.

Sport and fitness
The Hertfordshire Sports Village and the Oval gyms are open throughout the day and evening providing easy access to professional-level sports facilities at a discounted student price. Our Active Students programme also offers a wide range of free, on-campus, non-competitive sports throughout the day for you to get involved with, helping you get active while on campus.
