Sport and physical activity

Active or Ambitious - You're Welcome Here

At Herts, we believe everyone should have the chance to enjoy sport and physical activity—no matter your background, experience, or ability. That’s why our HertSquad programme offers free, inclusive activities through Active Students, open to all with no sign-up fees, no commitment, and no pressure—just a chance to move more, feel better, and meet new people.

The University of Hertfordshire offers students access to two fully equipped gyms—The Oval Gym on College Lane and the impressive Hertfordshire Sports Village on de Havilland campus. With flexible membership options starting from just £20.99 per month, it's easy and affordable to stay active, whether you're training regularly or just looking to keep fit between lectures.

If you're looking for something more competitive, you can take it to the next level by joining our Club Sport programme and even represent the University in matches and competitions across the country.

For high-level student-athletes, our Club Sport Performance Programme offers specialist support in American Football, Basketball, Netball, Women’s Football, and Men’s and Women’s Futsal. Athletes in these squads benefit from expert coaching, strength and conditioning, physiotherapy, and access to performance analysis—all designed to help you compete at the top level while balancing your studies.

From friendly, drop-in sessions to elite-level teams, we’ve got the facilities, support, and opportunities to help you stay active in a way that works for you. Whatever your goal—fun, fitness, or competition—HertSquad has something for everyone.

Fit for your career

We offer first-class teaching in excellent facilities whilst maintaining a nurturing community for you to study in. The result is, in the latest National Student Survey, our Sports Studies course scored 100% for student satisfaction.

The links we have made with the local community and beyond, through the Herts Sports Partnership, also mean we can provide excellent access to placement opportunities - both close to home and abroad. This enables you to apply what you have learned and kick-start your career.

My internship with Brumbies Rugby in Canberra, Australia, gave me the opportunity to constantly apply skills and techniques taught in the first two years of my course, widen my knowledge working alongside a professional medical and coaching team and interact and work with international athletes. I also got to travel the world and meet new friends!

In my opinion, Active Students is one of the best things about student life here at the University of Hertfordshire. Giving students this amazing opportunity for free is unbelievable!
