About the course

Indicative course structure

Event management is a fascinating career that can see you working on inspiring projects all over the world. It offers a balance of theoretical and practical learning that explores the latest trends and practices in the events management, tourism and hospitality business. It’s also ranked inside the top 10 of the Guardian University League Table 2019 for tourism, hospitality and event management. Our course draws on the latest theories and global case studies to explore why some events succeed and others fail. You’ll learn about event marketing, risk and security and hospitality operations. You’ll also have the chance to study abroad in one of our partner universities worldwide and to take an optional six-month internship at Walt Disney World, Florida, and study at the University of California Riverside.

Here at Hertfordshire Business School, we’re firmly focused on enterprise and employability. That’s why, throughout this degree, we give you opportunities to gain valuable, real-world work experience with innovative events organisations specialising in sports, concerts, festivals and corporate functions.

We’ll help you find summer internships, take up fascinating work shadowing opportunities and even go on an optional year-long work placement between your Second and Third Year. In the past, our students have completed placements with leading businesses and charities including Walt Disney, Bluehat Group, the British Fashion Council, Givergy and Hope for Children.

You can also choose to broaden your horizons by spending a year studying at one of our partner universities in Europe, North America or Australia. We have optional language modules you can take before you go and you can even choose to study abroad for half the year and work there for the other half – getting the best of both worlds.

In fact, our partnership with Walt Disney and the University of California Riverside gives you the chance to study and work in the USA on a fantastic internationally renowned programme.

However you choose to spend your year abroad, it’s a life-changing adventure and you’ll come back with exceptional, career-boosting experiences and skills.

Careers

We’re extremely proud to say that 90% of graduates from Hertfordshire’s BA Event Management degree are employed or in further study just six months after completing the course.

Our graduates go on to careers including events planning, hospitality management and marketing, often working for large travel companies, hospitality businesses and airlines. Thanks to their strong employability, enterprise and interpersonal skills, they have an average salary of £19,000 six months after graduating.

What job can I get?

Our graduates go on to work in the fast-growing event management industry in a variety of sectors from major sporting events to business conferences. You’ll be equipped for positions in the management and organisation of events in the public, corporate and charity sectors in companies such as First Protocol, Walt Disney Company, Goldman Sachs, Hilton Hotel Group, Luis Vuitton and Cancer Research UK. 100% of our graduates have gone on to work or further study within six months of finishing this course.

Teaching methods

You will be studying four 15 credit modules in each semester (this may vary between double modules) and your contact time varies between modules, but usually you will have two sessions per week for each module, a one-hour lecture following by a one-hour seminar/tutorial. Typically, a new topic or theory will be introduced in each lecture and will be followed up with class discussion and feedback in the subsequent seminar. In addition, as part of your study time, you will be collaborating with your peers on tasks and group assignments. Module leaders also offer weekly drop in and feedback sessions, usually 2 x 1 hours per module as well as revision sessions.

The University’s ‘online learning environment’ means you can access all your course resources, literature and timetables from anywhere in the world.

Usually, assessment is split between coursework and examinations. The style of coursework can vary from presentations to business reports, essays depending on the taught topics. 

Work Placement

At Hertfordshire Business School, we have strong relationships with organisations across the event management industry, including Walt Disney, creating valuable placement opportunities every year.

In the past, our students have also enjoyed placements with businesses and charities who manage corporate events, sports fixtures, concerts, shows and festivals, including Bluehat Group, the British Fashion Council, Givergy and charities including Hope for Children, First, WildGoose, Wendy Wu Tours

Study Abroad

The Hertfordshire BA in Event Management is very much an internationally focused degree, exploring trends, practices and approaches to event planning and coordination all over the world.
