Why study astrophysics?
Astrophysics is one of the oldest academic disciplines – analysing the behaviour of stars, galaxies and planets in order to understand how the universe works.
Our Department of Physics, Astronomy and Mathematics is among the top 10 in the UK and home to the world-leading Centre for Astrophysics Research.
You will gain knowledge of the physical and mathematical principles fundamental to this fascinating subject, as well as getting hands-on experience in our very own teaching observatory. You will have the opportunity to undertake a placement year in the UK or abroad as part of your studies. The analytical and observational skills you will develop can lead to employment prospects in a wide range of careers.
Student practicals
During their time at the University, physics and astrophysics students use the observatory at Bayfordbury to learn practical astronomy as part of their astrophysics courses.
When the weather is not favourable to optical observations practicals will involve radio astronomy, image reduction and processing, and the theory being practical astronomy.
There is a minibus which transports students from the main university campus to the Observatory for course practicals.
