Inbound study abroad

Studying abroad can be one of the most rewarding experiences to include within your course, and as many of our students say can be a 'life changing' experience.

You can study abroad in the second, third or fourth years of your course, taking modules at the University of Hertfordshire alongside our own students. You'll earn credit for your study at the University which you take back to your home university.

You will:

  • gain first hand experience of UK education
  • have the chance to live in another country and to widen your cultural horizons
  • consider your field of study from a different country perspective
  • make new friendships
  • enhance your employability and give you a competitive edge in the graduate job market.

At Herts we can offer you an individually tailored programme for one or two semesters, including an orientation and induction at the start of the programme.

We offer a full range of student support services during your stay, from programme advice, academic and personal support, to on campus medical and wellbeing services and religious provision.

We also offer help in finding residential accommodation, and the vast majority of exchange students stay in rooms on campus.

Partner universities

We offer exchange opportunities to students from all of our partner universities. Your home university must be a partner for you to qualify.

Our partnerships in Europe are organised by subject area, whilst our partnerships outside of Europe are normally university wide and cover most academic subjects. It is possible to exchange for the autumn (fall) or spring semesters or for a whole academic year.

The University of Hertfordshire has had an exchange programme for almost 30 years, so we are well acquainted with the needs and concerns of exchange students. We have longstanding relationships with many of our partners so they can advise you knowledgeably on studying at Herts.

Module selection

Our tutors will help you put together an individually tailored programme of study to meet both your educational requirements and personal interests. You can select modules from across the University in a single subject area or from several subject areas.

All modules are available, except for a few professional related modules, principally in the fields of health and education. Some modules require prior study and in this case, you will need to have completed a similar module at your home university.

Credits

The normal workload of a student at the University of Hertfordshire is four modules per semester, with modules rated at 15 UK credits, the equivalent of 7.5 ECTS or 3 US credits. Some modules, rated at 30 UK credits, span both semesters and are only open to yearlong exchange students.

How to apply

To be an exchange student, you must be an undergraduate student at your home university and have satisfactorily completed at least one year of study.

You should have a sufficient command of English to be able to study in English. This will normally be a B2 level in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). We do offer non-native speakers English language support during the semester.

To apply, talk to your home university's international or exchange office. We only accept students nominated by their home university. Once nominated you will receive the relevant application forms by email.
