Inbound study abroad

At Herts, we offer an individually tailored academic programme for one or two semesters, supported by a comprehensive orientation and induction programme at the start of your studies. Throughout your stay, you will have access to a wide range of support services, including academic guidance, personal support, on-campus health and wellbeing services, and faith and spiritual support.

On-campus accommodation is available, and the vast majority of exchange students choose to live in university-managed accommodation. We can also provide guidance and support in finding suitable accommodation to help you settle into life at Herts.

We offer exchange opportunities to students from all of our partner universities. To be eligible, your home university must have an exchange agreement with the University of Hertfordshire.

Our partnerships in Europe are organised by subject area, while partnerships outside Europe are generally university-wide and cover a broad range of academic disciplines. Students can study at Herts for the autumn (fall) semester, spring semester, or a full academic year.

The University of Hertfordshire has been running exchange programmes for over 30 years and has extensive experience supporting international exchange students. We have longstanding relationships with many of our partner institutions, whose staff can provide valuable advice and guidance on studying at Herts before your arrival.

Our academic Study Abroad Tutors will review your proposed study plan (Learning Agreement) and assess your suitability for the modules you wish to take. They will help ensure that your chosen modules meet any prerequisite requirements and are available during your period of study at Herts.

Most modules are available to exchange students, with the exception of a small number of professionally accredited modules, particularly in the fields of health and education. Some modules have prerequisite requirements, and in these cases, you will need to have completed equivalent study at your home university.

The standard study load at the University of Hertfordshire is 60 UK credits per semester. Most modules are worth 15 UK credits (7.5 ECTS credits), although some modules carry 30 UK credits (15 ECTS credits).

Some 30-credit modules are taught over the full academic year and are therefore only available to students studying at Hertfordshire for the entire year. However, a small number of modules, particularly within Business courses at Level 4, are worth 30 UK credits and are completed within a single semester.

Before selecting your modules, please ensure that you meet any prerequisite requirements.

To be eligible as an exchange student, you must be enrolled as an undergraduate student at your home university and have successfully completed at least one year of study.

You should have a sufficient command of English to study in an English-speaking academic environment. This will normally be equivalent to B2 level on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). We also offer English language support for non-native speakers throughout the semester.

To apply, please contact your home university's International Office or Exchange Office. We only accept applications from students who have been formally nominated by their home university. Once nominated, you will receive the relevant application information and forms by email.
