Autumn 2024 - Embrace physical computing

The 'Embrace physical computing' project includes the loan of a class set of Crumble physical computing devices and related components. Further information can be found below.

This exciting hands-on programme will comprise a 1-day workshop at our De Havilland campus, plus twilight support sessions, free kit loan and a celebration/round-up session. Combining primary computing, primary science and DT, this programme will remove barriers to getting physical computing off the ground for those who have not yet started and help those who have already taken their first steps to really embrace physical computing. The programme will increase teacher confidence while reducing timetabling pressure by combining different aspects of the curriculum. The programme is relevant for KS2 teachers.

This structured professional development programme aims to improve teachers’ confidence, knowledge and practice in computing, science and design technology through an engaging STEM project that will inspire the next generation of engineers. Teachers will be supported to plan and teach a culturally relevant project that will include building a model then programming it with moving parts and flashing lights. Pupils will apply their computing, design technology, scientific and mathematical skills as well as having the opportunity to work collaboratively and creatively.

This programme follows the Department of Education standards for professional development. By combining different aspects of the curriculum in one coherent project, timetabling pressures are reduced, and the financial burden of providing a class set of hardware is removed by our free kit loan. The programme's combination of face-to-face and remote sessions is designed to help ease the release of your designated staff and to get best results in terms of training and support to deliver an engaging and impactful project within the classroom.

Each school taking part in the project is entitled to borrow a class box (16 sets of kit) of Crumble physical computing device, USB cable, battery pack, AA batteries, crocodile clips, LEDs, motors, wheels and sparkles.

This professional development will help teachers to:

  • develop a clear intent for a broad, integrated cross-curricular STEM approach through designing a curriculum project
  • implement the project using inspiring and effective strategies
  • gather evidence of impact on children’s learning
  • be part of a network providing support, advice and ideas.

How will you learn

This programme will be delivered through a combination of face to face and remotely delivered sessions.

Who is it for?
