From a single practice to a dental support network
Dr Kishan Lakhani, Principal Dentist at Hydean Dental in Stevenage, tells us about his experience with the Help to Grow: Management programme
Tell me about your business
I currently oversee many practices in their Invisalign operation, including Hydean in Stevenage, which was my practice when I joined Help to Grow: Management.
I have recently launched a dentist’s business support programme aimed at supporting young dentists both personally and professionally. The primary objective is to elevate dentists to the next level by providing them with a robust support system - something that has historically been lacking in the industry.
What were the key challenges you were facing before joining the Help to Grow programme?
Like many of my colleagues, I was experienced in the clinical side of dentistry but faced significant challenges when it came to business element. Unfortunately, there were few resources available to help me navigate this. Most dentists learn from their principals, which means their business knowledge is often limited to a single perspective. The dental industry lacks structured guidance on how to run a sustainable, responsible business.
I operated my practice with purpose and strong values, but there was little structure. When I had an idea, I’d share it with my team, and while they were receptive, there was no clear framework to integrate these ideas into the broader business plan. I felt alone in my journey, with little support on how to grow a successful, values-driven practice. Most industry courses available were clinical in nature and didn’t address the business challenges we face as practice owners.
What made you join the Help to Grow: Management programme?
The decision to join the Help to Grow programme stemmed from frustration. I knew my practice had immense potential, both in terms of growth and innovation, but I felt lost without the structure and support needed to unlock that potential.
The dental industry can be a lonely one; you’re typically set on your career path at a young age, and there are few avenues for continued learning and mentorship once you’ve entered the profession. The Help to Grow: Management programme offered exactly what I needed; a comprehensive framework for personal and business growth.
What were your key learnings and how did you apply them?
One of the most profound takeaways was the importance of understanding and defining my business purpose. This clarity has had a ripple effect across our operations, inspiring us to become more involved in community and charity work. For example, we initiated fundraising campaigns for breast cancer awareness and have launched several other community-focused initiatives. Our purpose, to serve the local community of Stevenage beyond just dentistry, has now become an integral part of our mission.
The structured approach and plan provided by the programme eliminated much of the frustration I had previously felt. I now have clear direction, and our business has gained the structure needed for sustainable growth and I’ve invested in key areas, like marketing and our website.
The programme has also connected me with a network of peers and mentors as well as university professionals. These relationships have proven invaluable in expanding our vision and guiding us as we scale the business.
Any personal learnings?
Knowing my purpose! And the importance of aligning it with the mission of my business. Discovering my purpose has had a profound effect on both my personal sense of fulfilment and my professional success.
This clarity of purpose has translated into a more motivated team and has improved the way we implement new ideas. We’ve also introduced better support systems for our employees, including access to financial advice and wellbeing services.
It's really given me an enhanced sense of responsibility along with clarity on my purpose. I really enjoyed having a personal mentor and I am continuing to work with him on our business dashboard and a new project supporting other dental practices.
And what has been the result for your business?
We have a new lease of life! The clear mission, vision, and set of values have reinvigorated me and the business. Our practice has doubled in size, and we’re actively expanding by acquiring new practices. We’ve also launched the support programme for other dental business owners, in partnership with my mentor from the Help to Grow programme.
This growth is not just in numbers but also in impact. We are one of the few practices that consistently meet our targets despite the pressures on the NHS, and I’m no longer afraid to make strategic investments. I now understand how to track and measure key performance indicators (KPIs), ensuring that growth is sustainable and aligned with our core values.
Furthermore, I’ve become more committed to being an employer of choice. We’ve introduced a financial library for our staff, ensuring they have access to intelligent financial advice, which nurtures a sense of security and empowerment within the team so they can flourish personally and professionally.
What would you say to another business considering Help to Grow?
I would highly recommend it. The wealth of information and support available is invaluable, and the network of fellow participants is an excellent resource for ongoing learning and growth. Even small improvements—such as a 1% increase—can compound over time, resulting in exponential value for your business.
The programme doesn’t just teach theory. By working with the teachers, coaches and mentors you get to apply that theory within the specific context of your business, which is where real transformation happens. The combination of practical tools, mentorship, and a supportive network has been essential in taking my business to the next level.
The Help to Grow: Management programme has been a game-changer for both my personal development and the growth of my business. Through purpose-driven leadership, clear structures, and ongoing support, I’ve been able to transform my dental practice and make a meaningful impact in the community.
