The Leadership for AHPs short course runs once a year, with teaching commencing in October  and running until March

The course is open to students who have received funding from the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy through their leadership development programme, the British Dietetics Association or for those that are self-funding.

If you are a CSP or BDA funded student, you will still need to complete this application to the University of Hertfordshire in order for us to be able to register you onto the module.

The course has pre-work that needs to be completed prior to the first teaching day on 3rd October. You will receive access to this work once you have been registered onto the module.

The aim of this course is to develop AHP leadership capability and capacity, through:

·       Developing leaders with a critical understanding of leadership styles and business awareness applied to their service

·       Establishing leadership development for AHPs that adds value to their personal development and their service contribution, and is applicable to healthcare systems across the UK

·       Enabling those taking part to influence and make a positive, lasting change within their work environment

·       Promoting the importance of leadership behaviours and roles in AHPs

The content will include understanding the context of leadership and how leaders are developed, leadership behaviours, the importance of role modelling and aspects of socio-cultural theory that lead to an individual’s identity and agency. Participants will be given the opportunity to develop their skills for influencing and teamwork.  They will explore valuing, leading and working with a diverse workforce through exhibiting inclusive behaviours that support equality.  This will be supported by participation in action learning sets.

Knowledge and skills for implementing change in services in health organisations will be explored including service improvement models and tools and change theory.  Through undertaking a service change project, each participant will combine both their soft skills in influencing others, and hard skills of analysis of data and information, a balance of which is essential for today’s health leader.

The core themes are:

  •  Leading service change
  •  Leading others
  •  Leading services
  • Leading for impact

Learning outcomes

The aim of this course is to enable AHPs to examine critically the theory and practice of leadership, of both people and services, and reflect on the impact of their own leadership approach.

Assessment

The course has 2 assessments. A narrated powerpoint presentation on a service change that you have implemented/ plan to implement - submitted in January 2023, and a viva on 'you as a leader' which will be held in the weeks commencing 6th and 13th March 2023.
