The University of Hertfordshire’s partnership and careers-based, innovative approach to nursing and wider education has been reflected in this year’s shortlist for the prestigious Nursing Times Awards.

The University of Hertfordshire’s partnership and careers-based, innovative approach to nursing and wider education has been reflected in this year’s shortlist for the prestigious Nursing Times Awards.

It was announced yesterday (Thursday, 15 February), that the University has been shortlisted for six awards in four categories: nursing apprenticeship provider of the year, nurse education provider of the year, partnership of the year (twice) and teaching innovation of the year (twice).

The Awards aim to identify the next generation of nursing leaders and the finest nursing educators.

Dr Julia Warrener, Interim Dean for the School of Health and Social Work at the University of Hertfordshire, said:

“The University’s ethos is realising and supporting innovative students, equipped for work, who can think out-of-the box and know how to work in partnership with others to produce the best results for people receiving health and social work services.

“This is exactly why we are so pleased we have been shortlisted, because the shortlisted categories evidence the strength of our approach.”

The University’s nursing apprenticeships have gone from strength to strength, since January 2020 when just 11 apprentices were enrolled, to now where the provision has rocketed to more than eight times that number. Its January 2024’s intake encompassed more than 80 apprentices embarking on programmes across all fields of nursing.

“It is notable that two of our awards also draw on the excellent end-of-life expertise we have,” added Dr Warrener. “Understanding this subject is critical not just from a medical perspective but also from a social and emotional one. We specialise in both preparing our students for the realities of end-of-life care, and ensuring they can provide much-needed support and expertise at what is always a very difficult time.

“Being shortlisted in these categories is a tribute to the quality of the courses we run across many different disciplines, the skills and expertise of our staff, the practical skills being created in partnership with others, and the huge impact the University of Hertfordshire has in providing the next generation of health and social work l talent for the local community, the NHS and beyond. Congratulations to all the teams for their success, and good luck on awards night.”
