Postgraduate funding opportunities

We offer several postgraduate scholarships, bursaries and grants to help support your studies.

These awards may be based on academic achievement, financial need or personal circumstances. Most don’t need to be repaid and can usually be used towards tuition fees, study costs or living expenses. 


Funding available to eligible postgraduate students

Alongside postgraduate loans, we offer additional financial support including alumni discounts, sport scholarships and external funding opportunities 

Herts graduates can receive a 20% tuition fee discount when progressing to a postgraduate taught or research degree at the University. The scholarship is applied automatically if you're eligible.

To qualify, you must:

  • be a University of Hertfordshire graduate starting a postgraduate or research degree
  • be self-funding your studies
  • have accepted an offer for a full-time (or part-time for UK/EU students) award-bearing course.

The scholarship applies to the first year of full-time postgraduate study or all years of part-time study (UK/EU only). It does not apply to repeat modules or certain excluded courses, including PGCE and some healthcare and architecture programmes.
International students receiving the Graduate Scholarship may still be eligible for the full payment discount but cannot combine it with the International Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarship.

Supports talented student athletes competing at a high level while studying at Herts. Support packages are tailored to each athlete and may include performance services and financial support.

Priority is given to BUCS Performance Sports (Women’s Football, Men’s and Women’s Futsal, Men’s Basketball, Netball and American Football). Athletes from other sports may be considered if competing at national age group level or equivalent.

Support may include gym membership, strength and conditioning, physiotherapy, competition expenses, teamwear, academic flexibility, athlete development support and a financial contribution towards training and living costs. Support is agreed individually and may not include all services listed.

Creative Arts

Provides a full first-year tuition fee waiver for Home students on selected postgraduate courses.

The scholarship supports students who demonstrate active engagement in British Muslim communities and a long-term commitment to community or societal development. Eligible courses include MA Journalism and Media Communications and MA International Relations (including Advanced Research routes).

To apply, you must apply for your master’s course through the usual University admissions process and separately apply to the Aziz Foundation scheme. Receiving the scholarship does not guarantee a place on the course, and vice versa. 

Provides £1,000 to one student in their first year of the online MA Literature and Culture.

The award is open to UK and EU students studying full-time or part-time. Eligible students are assessed by a panel of academic staff based on an application form, including how the funding will support their studies.Education 

You can apply for funding from Student Finance England (SFE) to support your teacher training. This includes a tuition fee loan to cover your course fees and a maintenance loan to help with living costs. You can still apply if you already have a student loan, and repayments only begin once you’re earning above the threshold.

For 2026/27, the maximum tuition fee for postgraduate teacher training is:

  • £9,790 per year (full-time)
  • £7,335 per year (part-time)

Bursaries and scholarships are also available for courses leading to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). Recent government bursaries include up to £27,000 for subjects such as chemistry, computing, maths and physics, with additional scholarships available in selected subjects.

Provides £1,500 to a School of Education student who demonstrates a strong commitment to Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI).

The award is open to postgraduate taught Education students continuing their studies into the following academic year (for example, Semester B starters or those on two-year courses). September-start one-year courses are not eligible. One recipient is selected across both undergraduate and postgraduate Education courses.

Students are invited to apply in Semester B. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to interview.

Provides £750 to a student on a master’s or doctoral programme in the School of Education.

Eligible students will be invited to apply by the School of Education during the first year of their course. 


Health, Medical and Life Sciences

Provides a full first-year tuition fee waiver for Home students on selected postgraduate courses.

The scholarship supports students who demonstrate active engagement in British Muslim communities and a long-term commitment to community or societal development. Eligible courses include MSc Sustainable Planning, MSc Environmental Management, MSc Environmental Management for Agriculture and MSc Water and Environmental Management.

To apply, you must apply for your master’s course through the usual University admissions process and separately apply to the Aziz Foundation scheme. Receiving the scholarship does not guarantee a place on the course, and vice versa.

Provides at least £5,000 per year, with up to £3,000 additional funding available for eligible Nursing, Midwifery and Allied Health students (conditions apply).

Eligible courses include MSc Diagnostic Radiography and Imaging, MSc Nursing (Adult, Mental Health and Learning Disabilities), MSc Paramedic Science and MSc Physiotherapy (all pre-registration routes).

The Social Work Bursary – usually between £4,800 and £5,300 – is non-means tested, so it does not depend on your household income and does not need to be repaid. Find out more about social work bursaries and the latest rates.

If you are eligible for and receive the Social Work Bursary, you will not be eligible for a postgraduate loan from Student Finance England.


Physics, Mathematics, Engineering and Computer Science

Provides £2,000 to a full-time student on the MSc Astrophysics by Research programme.

Eligible students will be invited to apply in Semester A of their first year, with the recipient selected by an academic panel. 

Provides £750 to one first-year UK postgraduate student in the Department of Computer Science.

The award is open to full-time and part-time students. Eligible students are assessed by an academic panel based on an application form and Semester A academic performance.

Provides a full first-year tuition fee waiver for Home students on selected postgraduate courses.The scholarship supports students who demonstrate active engagement in British Muslim communities and a long-term commitment to community or societal development. Eligible courses include MSc Advanced Computer Science.

To apply, you must apply for your master’s course through the usual University admissions process and separately apply to the Aziz Foundation scheme. Receiving the scholarship does not guarantee a place on the course, and vice versa.

Applications are made directly through the Aziz Foundation. 


Law

Provides a full first-year tuition fee waiver for Home students on selected postgraduate courses.

The scholarship supports students who demonstrate active engagement in British Muslim communities and a long-term commitment to community or societal development. Eligible courses include LLM Bar Practice.

To apply, you must apply for your master’s course through the usual University admissions process and separately apply to the Aziz Foundation scheme. Receiving the scholarship does not guarantee a place on the course, and vice versa. 

Provides £1,500 to a Hertfordshire Law School student who demonstrates a strong commitment to Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI).

The award is open to postgraduate taught Law students continuing their studies into the following academic year (for example, Semester B starters or those on two-year courses).

September-start one-year courses are not eligible. One recipient is selected across both undergraduate and postgraduate Law courses.

Students can apply in Semester B. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to interview.
