Overview
What is a paramedic?

Paramedics are the most senior healthcare professionals at the scene of an emergency or accident. Working alone or alongside a fellow ambulance technician or emergency care assistant, a paramedic will be the first to assess the extent of the patient’s condition/injuries and administer immediate treatment. Often the first to arrive in emergent situations, a paramedic’s role in these types of scenarios is crucial.
What will I learn?
Our paramedics courses are unique in the country and have been designed taking into account the currently developing roles and professional registration of paramedics. When you graduate from one of our courses you will have the skills to:
- work more independently and effectively within the diversity of unscheduled out-of-hospital environments
- deliver holistic, efficient and sensitive patient care in the out-of-hospital emergency care environment
Our courses offer the opportunity to study for a full-time degree while carrying out the full training and practice required to become eligible to register with the Health Professions Council.
Our aim is to promote the best care and well-being of patients based on the best evidence available.
An experienced paramedic, employed by the University of Hertfordshire, in co-operation with the London Ambulance Service NHS Trust - manages the programme, which has been running for 13 years.
What will I do when I graduate?
Qualified paramedics within the UK predominantly work in the out-of-hospital unscheduled emergency care environment, either on front line ambulances or rapid response vehicles such as:
- cars
- motorcycles
- bicycles
Paramedics give a vast range of medication which falls within the Prescription Only Medicine Act (POMs), in addition to controlled drugs. Much of the work is caring for people who have fallen ill or are victims of accidents sustaining various degrees of injury.
Career options
Throughout the career of paramedics there are opportunities to progress into other avenues within many of the NHS ambulance trusts, four main streams are available to progress into:
- organisational management
- control services
- education and training of clinicians, such as emergency care practitioners or critical care practitioners.
