Run by the School of Creative Arts, MA Illustration Programme aims to provide you with an understanding of the cutting-edge of Illustration and related disciplines. It helps you develop your creative potential as an illustrator and provides you with the entrepreneurial skills to work as a successful practitioner.

The course gives you an opportunity to explore a range of media in the fields of illustration and looks at the, role of illustration in new and traditional media.

You will be encouraged to explore illustration and its relationships with fine art and digital media. The globalisation of media has provided the illustrator with a wide range of traditions on which to draw and particular attention is given to western and non-western conventions in the discipline.

The course also provides an opportunity to acquire advanced knowledge and skills in the use of narrative story-telling and its relationship to illustration as well as illustrative conventions in children’s and adult literature, comics and other media.

Particular emphasis is given to helping you acquire the entrepreneurial and commercial skills necessary to develop your work to its full potential and to advance your career through effective contacts with media industries. Emphasis is also given to professional practice.

This course would be of interest to illustrators as well as applied and fine artists or graphic designers wishing to expand their portfolio of skills and expertise, and those looking for career opportunities in related fields.

Entry requirements

Applicants should be able to demonstrate recent relevant education or experience in one of the fields or a related field, and have an ability to communicate effectively both in their chosen media and written and spoken English. Accreditation of professional experience may be possible for practitioners without a first degree.

A minimum IELTS score of 6.0, TOEFL 550 (213 CBT) or equivalent is required for those for whom English is not their first language.

English language requirements

All students from non-majority English speaking countries require proof of English language proficiency. The following qualifications and grades will be considered

  • GCSE English language grade A-C
  • IELTS 6.5 (with no less than 5.5 in any band)

Other English language tests are accepted. Please contact the International Office for details.

Assessment

Coursework - there will be a fixed date for assignment submission.

Careers

Particular emphasis is given to providing you with the skills necessary to further your career an illustrator. The course is designed to help you understand and work within the contemporary industrial environment and particular attention is given to helping you acquire entrepreneurial skills.
