Computing and software availability at the University

You'll find computers available to use in the Learning Resources Centres (LRCs) and computing labs across the campuses.

Lots of students choose to use their own laptops and other devices and you can plug your laptop into a datapoint or get on the wireless network.

Office 365 for everyone*

Office 365 is a powerful suite of tools which offers familiar applications like Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint, plus others which may be less familiar to you like Skype for Business (also known as Lync) for online meetings, and OneDrive for storing and sharing documents.

Office 365 gives you:

  • Full, installed Office applications - Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Publisher, and OneNote on up to 5 PCs or Macs.
  • Office on tablets and phones - for the Office experience on up to 5 tablets and 5 phones.
  • Online versions of Office - including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • File storage and sharing - with 1 TB storage.
  • Outlook email - including calendar, and contacts with a 50 GB inbox.
  • Unlimited online meetings - via instant messaging, phone or video conferencing.

Software available on University computers

There are over 400 different software applications available for students and staff to use. We aim to make all software as widely available as possible across all labs and the LRCs so that you can use it both in your timetabled sessions as well as for independent study.

Specialist software in the LRCs

The University has created two specialist software spaces in each of the LRCs and you'll find high-spec PCs in each configured with additional specialist software - available 24/7. All students can make use of the new service on a drop-in basis.

Software to download to your personal computer

The software portal allows students and staff to use their own computers to freely access some of the same software you can find on University networked computers in the LRCs and teaching labs. Currently available to Windows users only.

*Please note that Office 365 is not available for students on non-credit-bearing short courses.
