Express your style your way

Style at Herts is everywhere – from what people wear to lectures, to the trends shaping social life and the creativity that runs through photography, content and design. From campus culture to outlet shopping, vintage finds and London fashion districts, you’re perfectly placed to experiment and make your look your own.

Fashion on campus

University is often where people first feel free to experiment with style – trying new looks, building confidence and discovering what feels most like you. At Herts, fashion is part of that journey, woven into everyday student life.

The Hertfordshire Students' Union Fashion Society offers a space to explore styling, photography, shoots and creative collaborations, making fashion something you can actively take part in rather than just follow.

That creativity runs across campus too, where fashion meets design, media and content. And it all comes together at graduation, where Herts students are known for bold, standout looks that celebrate how far their style – and confidence – has come.

Shopping and retail nearby

For easy retail therapy, The Galleria in Hatfield is the obvious first stop. Just a short hop from campus, it combines outlet shopping, food and leisure in one place, with more than 80 stores and dedicated student deals that make it especially useful when budgets are real and style still matters. It is ideal for practical shopping with friends: trainers, a jacket, an outfit for a night out, then coffee afterwards without needing a full expedition.

If you want to widen the search, St Albans and Watford’s Harlequin Centre offers a stronger mix of big-name retailers and town-centre browsing. These are the places for an unhurried afternoon spent drifting between shops, picking up lunch and seeing what catches your eye rather than shopping with a strict list.

Independent boutiques and vintage style

For something less predictable than the high street, Hertfordshire’s smaller towns are where the good finds begin. Hitchin and Hertford both have pockets of independent boutiques, vintage rails and local markets where style feels more personal. These are the places to go when you want one-off pieces, unusual accessories or something that does not look like everyone else’s online basket.

There is also a different rhythm to shopping in these towns. You browse rather than rush. You discover rather than scroll. And because independent stores often sit alongside cafés, bakeries and market stalls, it feels more like a day out than an errand.

Fashion districts and street style

Studying at Herts also means London fashion is on your doorstep. Oxford Street gives you flagship stores and fast-moving trend cycles if you want the big-name experience, but the capital gets more interesting when you branch out. Covent Garden mixes fashion and beauty with piazza energy, café stops and a certain West End polish, while Camden Market offers a completely different mood: vintage denim, streetwear, subculture, bold silhouettes and the joy of finding something no one else in your seminar will be wearing.

That’s the real advantage of being based here. You can keep things easy and local one weekend, then head into London the next for a full style reset.

Fashion events and creative culture

Fashion is something to experience – not just buy.

Events such as London Fashion Week put you close to the industry’s bigger conversations and latest trends, while the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) remains one of the best places to understand how clothing, design and culture intersect. A good exhibition can change the way you look at everything from tailoring to textiles.

For a more street-level experience, head to Shoreditch, where pop-ups, vintage markets and independent designer events showcase cutting-edge style in a constantly evolving creative scene.

Together, these experiences connect everyday style with the wider world of fashion, design and creativity
