Global Economy and Business Research Unit (GEBRU)

Overview

The Global Economy and Business Research Unit (GEBRU) is focused on issues that face economies, businesses and communities in the context of globalisation.

We undertake both empirical and policy work, as well as engaging in the theoretical and methodological debates that underpin them.

Lead by Unit Head Professor Jane Hardy, members of the group are actively engaged with a range of stakeholders which include:

  • businesses
  • trade unions
  • non-governmental organisations

The approach of the group is interdisciplinary drawing on economics, political economy and international business.

Members of the group include experienced and early years researchers, as well as visiting scholars.

In addition, we have a group of PhD students and welcome further applications.

Aims of the unit

The unit aims to:

  • address current debates that face economies, businesses and communities in the context of globalisation
  • produce high quality research and publications for the academic and practitioner communities
  • engage with a range of stakeholders such as government, NGOs, trade unions and businesses
  • continue to build and develop networks with national and international scholars and organisations
  • encourage applications from potential PhD students

The unit's research themes include:

  • migration and labour market mobility
  • foreign direct investment and outsourcing business services
  • critical developments in international management and employment
  • competitiveness and growth in core and emerging markets
  • commodifying and outsourcing public services
