Our culture

Inspire minds, drive discovery and shape your field at a university that champions your growth and celebrates your achievements.

Academic and research roles at Herts reflect a balance of teaching, research, and professional practice. You will work as part of a subject team, contribute to curriculum development, and support students through teaching and supervision. All colleagues are encouraged to also engage in research projects, publications, conference activity, and impact work.

Academic integrity and openness matter to us. We value people who take pride in their discipline and who are willing to share ideas, challenge thinking, and build constructive academic environments. Our approach is professional and down-to-earth, leadership is accessible, and collaboration is part of daily working life.

You’ll be supported by experienced academic leaders and work alongside colleagues who are committed to raising standards and sharing expertise. Whether you are developing your academic profile or bringing established experience, you will find a community that respects meaningful work and consistent progress.

Your next move matters. Join a university that’s as ambitious as you are.

Opportunities

We offer clear academic career pathways and support your development, whether your strengths are in teaching, research, leadership or a combination of all three.

Academic careers follow clear pathways with recognition for teaching excellence, research achievement, and academic leadership. Progression routes typically include Lecturer, Senior Lecturer, Principal Lecturer, Associate Professor and Professor. There are also flexible ways to begin an academic career with us. Many colleagues join from professional or industry backgrounds, contributing their expertise as Visiting Lecturers or part-time academics before progressing.

We support professional recognition through Advance HE Fellowships at all levels, National Teaching Fellowships, our own Vice-Chancellor’s Awards, and Professorships in Learning and Teaching.

Research-active colleagues benefit from support for publications, collaborative projects, doctoral supervision, external funding bids, and REF development. Our Doctoral College brings together research students and supervisors across disciplines, creating a thriving research community.

Teaching-focused academics are equally supported, with opportunities for curriculum leadership, pedagogic research, learning enhancement projects, and assessment innovation.

With study leave, mentoring, and leadership development programmes, we help you build an academic career with depth and purpose.
