Your application process

Our Doctoral College team will guide and support you through the full process, from identifying a suitable research degree to submitting your application. We recommend exploring our research areas, discussing your ideas with potential supervisors, and preparing a strong proposal before applying. We will carefully review your application after submission to ensure the right academic fit, helping you take the next step in your research career with confidence.

Entry requirements

The minimum entry requirement for most postgraduate research degrees is normally a 2:1 or above in an appropriate discipline. In some cases, Research Tutors may apply discretion based on your experience, qualifications or proposed research project.

Your research proposal

A research proposal may be required for your application, depending on the programme you’re applying to. It helps us understand your academic interests and research potential.

Your proposal should clearly outline your topic, research questions, aims and objectives, and explain how your work will contribute to your field. You should also demonstrate awareness of relevant literature and proposed methods where appropriate.

We recommend talking through your ideas with an academic member of staff or potential supervisor before applying, as they can advise on the scope and feasibility of your project. You can also contact the Doctoral College for guidance on application requirements.

Supporting documents

You may need to provide supporting documents as part of your application, depending on the programme you’re applying to. These can include academic transcripts and qualifications, and in some cases evidence of English language proficiency or a CV.

Check the requirements for your chosen research degree and email the Doctoral College team if you’re unsure what to include. Providing the correct information helps our academic teams assess your application.

Submitting your application

Once your proposal and documents are ready, you can submit your postgraduate research application directly to Herts. Applications are reviewed by academic colleagues and the Doctoral College to check compatibility with our research strengths, supervision availability and preparation for research study. You may be contacted for further information or discussion during this stage. After review, you’ll be informed of the outcome and any next steps. The Doctoral College team are available throughout the process to provide guidance and answer questions, ensuring you feel supported from application through to enrolment.
