Credit Accumulation and Transfer Scheme (CATS)
CATS is a flexible framework that allows you to combine recognised prior learning and / or experience with Herts modules to study towards an academic award or qualification. You can choose modules across disciplines, study full-time or part-time, and accumulate credits at a rate that fits your circumstances. This route suits working professionals, career changers and international students seeking a personalised academic pathway that supports individual progression.
How are credits calculated?
CATS credits are awarded for each module you successfully complete. As you progress, these credits accumulate to build towards formal qualifications.
Different awards require different totals. For example, at undergraduate level you’ll need 120 credits for a Certificate of Higher Education, 240 credits for a Diploma of Higher Education, and 360 credits for an Honours degree. At postgraduate level, you can achieve a Postgraduate Diploma with 120 credits and a master’s with 180 credits. Whether you study full-time or part-time will influence how quickly you can build credits: full-time students normally take 90–120 credits a year, while part-time students can take up to 75 credits. This flexibility means you can move at a pace that suits your commitments.
