Communications and Intelligent Systems Research Group

The Communications and Intelligent Systems Research Group brings together five synergistic scientific fields that advance the frontiers of communication technologies, intelligent systems, and immersive environments. Its research spans from fundamental studies in radio frequency engineering, antenna design, and 5G/6G wireless communications to applied developments in virtual reality, augmented reality, robotics, and autonomous systems. The group integrates expertise in artificial intelligence, machine learning, cognitive networks, and telepresence, to create intelligent, adaptive, connected, and immersive systems for next-generation applications. Research activities encompass reconfigurable metasurfaces, millimetre-wave circuits, energy-efficient and secure wireless systems, smart grids, image-based virtual reality, and human–machine interaction. By combining cutting-edge work in extended reality (XR), 3D and true-dimensional visualization, intelligent control, teleoperation, and wireless sensor networks, the group drives innovation in sectors such as healthcare, energy, transport, defence, and industry. Its interdisciplinary collaborations with academia, industry, and government underpin impactful research that contributes to the digital and intelligent future of communication, visualization, and autonomous technologies.

Prof. Salvatore Livatino

Leader of the Communications and Intelligent Systems (CIS ) Research Group

Salvatore Livatino is Professor of Immersive Systems, Head of the Communications and Intelligent Systems Research Group, and Leader of the Virtual Reality and Robotics Laboratory. His research focuses on: (a) the assessment of extended reality (XR) user-interface solutions for tele-exploration, tele-mentoring, and teleoperation, with emphasis on action monitoring and decision-making; and (b) the development of immersive technologies, with particular focus on image-based virtual reality, three-dimensional and true-dimensional visualization, and AI-enhanced XR. He has authored numerous journal and conference papers and has contributed to several European projects and UK-funded research initiatives. His teaching experience includes problem-based learning and multidisciplinary education.
