Climate Mitigation Solutions (CMS)
The Climate Mitigation Solutions (CMS) is one of the four research groups of the Centre for Climate Change Research (C3R). Our work explores trajectories of mitigation, adaptation and transmission towards net-zero emissions in transport, industry and building design and retrofit sectors.
Our structured and science-led approach is aimed to deliver a whole system approach exploring drivers for change within the transport, industry and building design and retrofit with an emphasis on technology innovation.
The Group focuses on three specific research themes that reflect the team’s research specialities and collaborations. These are:
- industry and power
- building design and retrofit.
Transport systems are also a core place to build strategies for climate change mitigation solutions, and our research addresses a range of technologies that have the potential to deliver efficient, low-carbon transport alongside associated infrastructures. Topics of exploration include:
- low-carbon and renewable fuels
- energy storage
- energy harvesting
- micro gas turbine MGT
- full cells
- fast charging poles.
Industry and power
We also explore alternative power sources such as electricity and hydrogen and how they could be used to deliver the transport of the future. Topics of exploration include:
- decarbonisation pathways including carbon capture and storage
- energy efficiency enhancement
- application of bio-energy.
Building design and retrofit
Part of our research relates to the design and retrofit of buildings. An urgent matter for policy change is to introduce a requirement for net-zero design of new buildings and for net-zero retrofit of existing buildings in order to help the UK achieve zero emissions targets by 2050. Topics of exploration include:
- low-energy and zero-energy building
- decarbonisation of heating and cooling
- combined heat and power (CHP) boilers
- hydrogen CHP boilers.
