Prof Rebecca Houze
TVAD Visiting Professor
Professor Rebecca Houze is a specialist in the history of design and the decorative arts, with an emphasis on textiles and dress. She received her BA from the University of Washington (1993) and her M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Chicago (1994, 2000). Her research centres on the relationship between art, industry, collection, and display in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries
Professor Houze is author of Textiles, Fashion, and Design Reform in Austria-Hungary Before the First World War: Principles of Dress (Ashgate, 2015), and New Mythologies in Design and Culture: Reading Signs and Symbols in the Visual Landscape (Bloomsbury, 2016). She has published her work over the years in Journal of Design History, Design Issues, Fashion Theory, Textile, and Centropa, and is co-editor of The Design History Reader (Berg, 2010).
During her two visits to the University, in October 2016, and February 2017, Prof Houze engaged with research staff and students at all levels, in the Schools of Creative Arts and Humanities. Her visits focussed on the histories and practice of design, textiles and fashion and graphic design. She led and/or contribute to sessions including:
- A teaching session with the Creative Design Crafts BA Hons students
- A contribution to the TVAD Talks series
- A TVAD Research Group staff and research student reading group
- A workshop for the DHeritage Professional Doctorate in Heritage in the School of Humanities
Dr Daniel Huppatz
TVAD Visiting Researcher for 2015-16
Dr Daniel Huppatz is a Senior Lecturer at Swinburne University of Technology, Melbourne, Australia. His current research interests include mapping histories of modern Asian design, Australian design, and histories of interior design and architecture. As well as presenting papers at numerous academic conferences, Dr Huppatz has been widely published in journals including Design Issues, Journal of Design History and Design and Culture.
His other interventions include editing Design: Critical and Primary Sources (Bloomsbury, 2016), a collection of 75 essential texts on design from the mid-19th century to the present day, covering key thinkers, movements and issues for design, and co-editing Unbounded: On the Interior and Interiority (Cambridge Scholars Press, 2015). Huppatz is a co-founder of the Design History Australia Research Network, DHARN. He is currently working on a book titled Modern Asian Design.
Dr Huppatz will be working with researchers both within and beyond TVAD, and other staff and students in the School of Creative Arts and the School of Humanities. His work with us will cover topics including interior design and global design history to modern Asian design. These topics will be examined through sessions including:
- A research training seminar with the Level 6 UG and MA students in the Interior Architecture programme
- A contribution to the School of Creative Art's Art Talk series
- A staff reading group with the TVAD researchers
- Participation in a workshop on Global and Local Heritage for the DHeritage Professional Doctorate in Heritage in the School of Humanities
Dr Javier Gimeno-Martínez
TVAD Visiting Researcher for 2014-15
Dr Gimeno-Martínez is Assistant Professor at the VU University Amsterdam.
Javier's research interests encompass design and fashion as related with consumption, gender and national identity. He has been conducting research on the shifting cultural status of industrial design and craft from the 1950s up to today with Belgium as case study, funded by the Research Foundation – Flanders from 2007 to 2010.
Dr Gimeno-Martínez got his PhD in 2006 from the KU Leuven with the dissertation "The Role of the Creative Industries in the Construction of Regional/European Identities (1975-2002): Design and Fashion in Belgium and Spain." He holds a MA in Industrial Design from the Universidad Cardenal Herrera, Valencia (Spain) and an MA in Art History from the Universidad de Valencia
Javier was a visiting scholar in the department of Design History at the Royal College of Art (London, UK) for the year 2009-2010.
Dr Gimeno-Martínez will be working with researchers, staff and students in the School of Creative Arts. The topic for Dr Gimeno-Martínez's visits is national identity in design, examined through sessions including:
- A research training seminar
- Student research presentations
- A staff reading group
Dr Kjetil Fallan
The TVAD Visiting Researcher for 2012-13 is Dr Kjetil Fallan of Oslo University, Norway. Dr Fallan will visit the School of Creative Arts in November 2012 and May 2013.
The topic for Dr Fallan's visits is subjectivity in academic and practice-based work, examined through a varied programme of events including:
- A staff colloquium
- An Art Talks lecture, 'Turning My Story into History: Making Memories Matter'
- A research training seminar 'Up Close and Personal: Subjectivity in Design and Research'
- Student research presentations
- A staff reading group
- A school-wide workshop, Icons and Iconicity

Dr Kjetil Fallan is Associate Professor of Design History in the Department of Philosophy, Classics, History of Art and Ideas at the University of Oslo.
He has published widely and is:
- Author of Design History: Understanding Theory and Method (Berg Publishers, 2010)
- Editor of Scandinavian Design: Alternative Histories (Berg Publishers, 2012)
- Co-editor, with Grace Lees-Maffei, of Made in Italy: Reassessing a Century of Italian Design (Berg Publishers, 2013)
Dr Fallan has articles in journals including the Journal of Design History, Design Issues, Enterprise and Society, History and Technology, and Design and Culture. Dr. Fallan is an editor of the Journal of Design History.
Dr David Brody
In 2011-12, TVAD hosted Dr David Brody (Parsons, the New School for Design, New York City) as TVAD Visiting Researcher.
During his visits in October 2011 and March 2012, Dr Brody has been involved in research activities with every constituency in the School of Creative Arts by:
- giving open lectures in the School's Critical Dialogues series
- leading workshops and seminars for postgraduate and research students
- participating in research seminars with TVAD and research-active School staff
TVAD's plans for the future include hosting a Visiting Professor.

Dr David Brody is an Associate Professor of Design Studies at Parsons The New School for Design in New York where he directs the Masters Program in the History of Decorative Arts and Design.
He is the author of Visualizing American Empire (University of Chicago Press, 2010) and co-editor of Design Studies: A Reader (Berg 2009).
A specialist in material culture, visual culture, and design studies, Dr Brody has published writing in:

- Journal of Design History
- American Periodicals
- Design and Culture - an article on hotel design and housekeeping featured in 2011
His new book project is titled Do Not Disturb: Design, Hotels, and Labor and is under advance contract with the University of Chicago Press.
