The following guidance will help you successfully complete your online interview for Medicine. Please read through to the end to make sure you are fully prepared and have told us if you require any access arrangements or reasonable adjustments.

Your interview instructions

You will have 14 days to complete the interview. Once started, you must complete the interview in one sitting as you will not be given the opportunity to pause, save, or come back once started.

The automated Multiple Mini Interview (MMI) will take approximately 50 minutes to complete and will involve seven questions with a time allocation of four minutes for each, plus a one-minute break between questions. Each question will be read aloud by the interviewer and will also be presented on screen for you to read.

Before you begin, you must complete the practice set up, including checking your Wi-Fi and confirming that your webcam and microphone are working. You will also complete a practice question, to help you feel comfortable with the system.

Important information

Your online MMI must be completed independently and honestly. You should not use notes, prompts, or assistance from anyone else while recording your responses. Any attempt to gain an unfair advantage, including reading from prepared scripts, receiving help off-camera, using multiple electronic devices, or using AI-generated answers, will be considered dishonest.

Universities take academic integrity very seriously and suspected dishonesty may result in your application being rejected. Please follow all instructions carefully, and demonstrate your genuine attributes, communication skills, and motivation for medicine.

Help and guidance

  • You should view the instruction guide on the SAMMI® interview process before starting your interview.
  • You can find advice on microphone and video problems if needed.
  • If you experience any issues during your interview, or are not available during the interview period, please contact a member of the Medicine Admissions team as soon as possible. Emails are monitored from 08.30 to 17.00 (GMT), Monday to Friday.

Access arrangements and reasonable adjustments

We wish to support you as much as possible in your interview. Access arrangements are available for applicants with disabilities. If you require reasonable adjustments to complete an online interview (these are described as ‘accommodations’ in the interview instruction guide), please DO NOT use your unique login details provided by email. Instead, please email the Medicine Admissions team within seven days of receiving your invitation to tell us:

  • if you have been granted extra time or had other adjustments made in your exams at school or college
  • if you require any other support or any adjustments to complete an online interview.

It is important that you tell us this as soon as possible, so that we can incorporate your reasonable adjustments into your interview as necessary; this may mean we need to send you a different login code and/or a new 14-day deadline to complete the interview. Please wait until you have heard back from us before starting your interview.

If you do not request any adjustments before taking your interview, you will not be able to retake the interview once it has been started, and we will assess your application based on the recording you have submitted.

Mentioning your disability or specific learning difference/difficulty will ensure that any appropriate adjustments can be made and will maximise your opportunity to demonstrate your suitability for studying medicine at Hertfordshire Medical School. Please be assured that all admissions decisions are based solely on academic merit. Your information will be treated as confidential and only shared with those staff members required to make necessary arrangements. You can find further information on disability support and disclosure on our website.
