Streetlaw
Streetlaw is a legal education project that improves access to justice by simplifying legal concepts for the community. Students work in teams to deliver interactive presentations on legal rights and responsibilities to school children and community groups.
Presentations can take place in various settings, including schools, prisons, homeless shelters, and charities supporting domestic violence victims. Topics range from police powers and knife crime to sexual consent, sexting, and family law issues.
Role of student volunteers
Students prepare workshops by conducting legal research on an agreed topic and creating interactive presentations with staff support. These presentations encourage audience engagement and allow them to develop a better understanding of their legal rights and responsibilities.
Sessions often include practical exercises, role plays and quizzes, delivered by students in groups of two or three. This is a fantastic opportunity for students to build confidence and develop skills valued by employers, such as communication, networking and legal research.
