Short Course - Pre-AMHP Foundation Course

About the course

This short course is designed to achieve two objectives: First, to build knowledge and understanding of social perspectives on mental health issues. Second, to familiarise candidates with current academic standards including use of library and internet sources, assignment requirements, and the use of social research methods.

Course Aims

This short course is designed to achieve two objectives: First, to build knowledge and understanding of social perspectives on mental health issues. Second, to familiarise candidates with current academic standards including use of library and internet sources, assignment requirements, and the use of social research methods.

Course content

This is a short course, divided between lectures and discussions, and practical elements. Some or all of the following are included: 

  • Introduction and analysis of social perspectives on mental health.
  • The relationship of social and medical models in current mental health services.
  • A written assignment on social and medical perspectives in mental health.
  • Undertaking either: Five hours of observations on an inpatient psychiatric ward together with a reflective account of the experience. Or, a semi-structured interview with 3 detained patients about their experience of detention, together with a report.
  • The course links to the Health and Care Professions Council Competencies for Approved Mental Health Professionals. 

This course is for qualified mental health professionals considering or preparing for moving on to undertake AMHP training. Students usually include social workers, community psychiatric nurses and Occupational Therapists.

Teaching methods

The course is taught at the College Lane campus in Hatfield.

Module Leader is Dr Phil Anthony. Phil Anthony is Senior Lecturer at the University, a qualified social worker and AMHP.

Computer Equipment Requirement

Delivery of the course incorporates blended learning which aims to combine e-learning activities with campus based learning.

You therefore need to have access to a suitable personal computer and a good reliable Internet connection (broadband recommended).

Most modern PCs or Macs (less than 3 years old) should be suitable.

If you have any queries or need any additional support with IT skills, the School employs an e-learning technologist who will be pleased to help and advise you.
