Life at Herts

When Han first arrived in the UK from Vietnam, her plan was simple: complete a one-year master’s degree and return home. However, her time at the University of Hertfordshire transformed that plan and her future. ‘The MSc in International Business was ideal for students like me who want to undertake a traditional postgraduate degree.’

What she found at Herts was much more than just a classroom. ‘There are so many things that I like about my course. First, I can maximize my full potential by participating in impactful academic and social activities. Additionally, there are networking events or university business challenges we can do during our time as students to make ourselves stand out in the current job market.’

The support she received from her tutors and programme team proved pivotal in her personal and academic growth. ‘The supportive and encouraging environment provided by the program team. I did not expect to become a teaching assistant at the university after completing my master’s degree… I always treasure every opportunity and support from the university that has helped me become the person I am today.’

Her favourite memories at Herts reflect the inclusive, international atmosphere of the university. From student potlucks celebrating global cultures to supporting new MSc students as a student representative, she fully immersed herself in the community. ‘I loved seeing the new cohort full of talented and ambitious students, as well as sharing my experiences… helping the programme team plant and water the seeds for the future.’

Looking ahead

Today, Han works as a Teaching Assistant for Hertfordshire Business School, part of the same university that supported her transformation from postgraduate student to aspiring academic.

Her part-time roles during her studies provided a strong foundation for this position. ‘My two part-time positions have significantly contributed to my professional growth. The first is as a Postgraduate Student Engagement Champion, where I support new students. The second position is as a research assistant on a UK government project. Together, these part-time roles have prepared me for my full-time position as a teaching assistant.’

In her academic work, she blends research skills, communication, and empathy, skills she hopes to develop further as she works toward her ultimate goal. ‘I want to become a university lecturer in the future. My goal is to create engaging lectures and an inclusive classroom environment where all students feel like they are part of the classroom.’

Her vision is not just to teach, but to inspire. ‘I want to provide them with the space and opportunity to share their knowledge and learn from their classmates.’

Advice for future students

Han encourages students to make the most of every opportunity, both inside and outside the classroom. ‘Maximize your potential by involving yourself in different activities outside your studies, but don’t forget to enjoy your time as a student and explore some of the beautiful destinations around the UK or Europe.’

She is a passionate advocate for stepping out of your comfort zone. ‘At Herts, I had the best time of my student life… I also had the opportunity to explore beautiful cities such as Cambridge, Oxford, Edinburgh, and Cardiff. My course lasted 18 months… I decided to spend this time traveling solo to France, Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands. These were countries I had always wanted to visit when I was young, and the experience served as a fuel to boost my spirit and motivation before starting a new semester.’

She adds, “I believe that my journey was a testament to the quote, ‘You only live once,’ and to the power of stepping outside of your comfort zone and making the most of every opportunity.’
