Choosing Herts

Amy knew that she wanted to work in the camera department for television productions before starting university, so choosing Herts was an easy decision. The specialist equipment, hands-on learning and access to industry-standard cinema cameras gave her the practical experience she was looking for.

Throughout her studies, Amy built both her technical expertise and confidence with the support of the course’s lecturers and technicians. “I truly believe that I wouldn’t have ended up in my current role without the amazing lecturers I had at Herts – they were the best!”

A standout production

One of Amy’s favourite aspects of the course was the creative freedom she was given on film projects. “I loved the whole process of coming up with ideas for our films, making the shot lists, planning out the lighting and costumes. It was amazing seeing our projects come to life.”

A particular highlight was working on one of her student film projects, Written by a Woman, during her second year. “I put all my creative juices into that film! It was a real highlight for me at Herts.”

Finding your path

Today, Amy works as a Camera Assistant on ITV’s Emmerdale, where she is responsible for making sure everything runs smoothly for the camera department. Her role includes rigging and de-rigging cameras in the studio and on location, as well as troubleshooting if any issues arise during production. Looking ahead, she hopes to become an established camera operator within the television industry.

Her advice for students starting their journey is to discover what role makes you excited and pursue it wholeheartedly. “Look through the credits of your favourite productions, find the production manager’s email and get some work experience. Go for it!”

Before starting as a Camera Assistant, Amy managed to get work experience on Emmerdale by doing just that. “It was an incredible experience, and I immediately knew this was the show I wanted to kickstart my career on.”
