The countdown begins: Two weeks until Hertfordshire Medical School welcomes its first cohort of medical students
In just over two weeks, the University of Hertfordshire will open the doors of Hertfordshire Medical School to its first cohort of aspiring doctors, marking a historic moment for the University, the county and the future of healthcare in the region.
Behind the scenes, final preparations are underway in the county's first-ever medical school as teams put the finishing touches to a fully refurbished standalone building that will soon become home to the next generation of medical professionals.
State-of-the-art facilities are now taking shape, including advanced digital anatomy tables that allow students to explore the human body through virtual dissection, alongside specialist anatomical teaching resources used to support clinical understanding and patient care.
Dedicated clinical skills areas are also being equipped ready for students to begin learning in realistic healthcare settings, with advanced simulation technology helping them develop the practical, decision-making and communication skills required of modern doctors.
The first cohort will arrive in September and complete a three-week induction programme before beginning formal teaching in early October.
Professor Irene Ctori, Dean of the School of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences, said:
"The excitement across the University is palpable. After years of planning, collaboration and investment, we're now just weeks away from welcoming the very first students through the doors of Hertfordshire Medical School.
"The transformation of this building has been incredible. Months of work have seen it become a vibrant, modern medical school and it's wonderful to see the vision becoming reality. Every day brings another milestone as we install the final specialist equipment and prepare for the arrival of our students.
"What makes our Medical School particularly special is the environment our students will learn in. Healthcare isn't delivered by doctors working alone. Every day in hospitals, GP surgeries and community settings, doctors work alongside nurses, paramedics, midwives, physiotherapists and many other health professionals to provide the very best care for patients.
"Because of the strength and breadth of healthcare education at Hertfordshire, our medical students will learn within an interdisciplinary environment from day one. They'll develop an understanding of each other's roles, learn how to communicate effectively across disciplines and gain first-hand experience of the collaborative approach that is essential in modern healthcare.
"Our students will train in safe but highly realistic environments using immersive learning spaces, advanced simulation technology and hyper-realistic mannequins that replicate real-life clinical scenarios. They will learn not only the science and skills of medicine, but also the teamwork, compassion and communication that patients deserve.
"These students will become the doctors who care for future generations. We cannot wait to welcome them and begin this exciting new chapter together."
The opening of Hertfordshire Medical School represents a major step forward in expanding healthcare education in the region and supporting the future NHS workforce.
For the students preparing to join the inaugural cohort, the countdown is now on. In just over two weeks – on Monday, 14 September - they will become the first future doctors to walk through the doors of Hertfordshire Medical School and help write the next chapter in its history.
