Hertfordshire Medical School, set to open in September 2026, marks a transformative milestone for healthcare education in the region. As the county’s first medical school, it will offer a five-year Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree, designed to train highly skilled doctors in a dynamic, interprofessional environment. Building on the University of Hertfordshire’s strong foundation in health sciences, the school will play a vital role in addressing the UK’s growing demand for medical professionals while fostering innovation, research, and collaboration with NHS partners.
Our building plans
The new 2,000m2 building will offer resources that mirror real-world healthcare facilities to better develop students’ practical skills. As well as new VR and AR technology, students will access a six-bed ward, virtual anatomy lab and two immersive skill rooms, alongside dedicated classrooms and tutorial spaces.
Sustainability is at the heart of all our estate projects. By refurbishing an existing building on our College Lane campus, we will be minimising our carbon footprint and contributing towards our sustainability targets. Building work will commence in autumn 2025 and will conclude by autumn 2026, ready for our first cohort of medicine students.
University of Hertfordshire Vice-Chancellor, Professor Anthony Woodman, said:
“We are delighted with our plans to open Hertfordshire Medical School in September 2026, at a time when demand could not be greater or more desperately needed.
Our Medical School proposal aligns with proposed reforms aimed getting the NHS back on its feet, fixing the foundations and delivering a health service fit for the future. The development is part of our ongoing commitment to advancing health, medicine and life sciences in the county and beyond and I am thrilled we are making such strong steps to make this important aspiration a reality.”
Ashe Group have been contracted by the University of Hertfordshire to carry out the construction of the new building.
