Opportunities

Whether you want to tap into our clearly-defined career structure with two distinct technical pathways, or take advantage of ample training opportunities to stay current, your technical career in higher education can take root and grow here at Herts.

Our technical career framework offers two recognised pathways: Technical Specialism and Technical Teaching. These run alongside traditional managerial routes, giving you the flexibility to deepen your expertise or support teaching, depending on your strengths and interests.

Whether your background makes you a good fit to join us as a Technical Officer supporting students and maintaining equipment in subject-specific spaces, or you’re ready to take on a leadership role looking after health and safety, risk management and compliance, get ready to thrive at Herts.

Progression is built into every role. You can advance within your grade by gaining new skills or move into higher grades and leadership positions. A dedicated budget supports technical training, conferences, and professional development. You’ll also have a chance to shape the future of technical services by joining the Technician Commitment Steering Group, which brings together staff from across the University to plan events and training.

Technician Commitment

We’re proud to champion the vital work of our technical staff. As a founding signatory of the Technician Commitment, we’re driving visibility, recognition, and career development to create fulfilling pathways and embed technical excellence across the University.

Our technical staff play a central role in delivering academic excellence and supporting graduate outcomes. We’ve embedded the principles of the commitment — visibility, recognition, career development and sustainability — into every aspect of how we support our technical teams.

We actively raise the profile of individuals and teams, highlighting their contribution to the University’s success. We champion professional registration and external award schemes, and our career progression pathways ensure technical staff are recognised and rewarded for their expertise.

We have an appointed Technician Commitment Champion and a steering group that includes technical staff from diverse levels and areas. These connect technical colleagues with institutional leadership, ensuring their voices are heard and their contributions recognised.

We continue to embed technical skills across departments, helping our people thrive and ensuring we make the most of our collective expertise. In 2024, we received the Technician Commitment Impact Award, recognising our sustained efforts to enhance the visibility and value of technical roles.
