Why work in higher education?

Higher education is a sector full of purpose and possibility. Every day, your work helps students reach their potential and support groundbreaking research and innovation. You’ll be part of a university that values its people, invests in its community, and stays true to its mission.

For professional staff, higher education is more than a workplace, it’s a sector where your expertise can make a real difference in people’s lives. Your work contributes to learning, research, and innovation in ways that create long-lasting impact.

At the University of Hertfordshire, you’ll be part of a not-for-profit organisation that reinvests in its people and community. We focus on creating an environment where professional growth and wellbeing go hand in hand, and we offer flexible working options, generous annual leave, and a competitive pension scheme. We create conditions for people to do their best work with supportive leadership and clear opportunities for development.

Higher education offers a unique environment for collaboration. You’ll work across academic schools and professional departments, building networks that broaden your experience and support your career growth. Every role plays a part in shaping strategy, helping students and staff thrive, and giving your work a real and lasting impact.

It's a fast-moving and dynamic sector, full of possibility. Here, that energy is balanced by a culture that values wellbeing, inclusion, and personal growth. You’ll be encouraged to take initiative and contribute to meaningful change with the chance to see the real impact of your work every day.

Opportunities

As a professional colleague, you’ll find plenty of opportunities to learn and progress. We’re committed to supporting your career development and helping you expand your expertise. You’ll have the chance to work on meaningful projects while contributing to the University’s future.

Professional staff at Herts have access to a wide range of learning and development opportunities designed to support career progression and broaden expertise. You can choose from hundreds of workshops and development programmes, covering everything from leadership, project management, and digital skills, to wellbeing, equality, and inclusion. You can take up to five days of study leave each year to focus on your professional growth, with many colleagues choosing to study on one of our part-time courses with a fee waiver where it supports their role.

Beyond formal training, opportunities such as mentoring and job-shadowing allow you to explore and learn from different areas of the University.

We take pride in recognising professional excellence across our University. The annual Vice-Chancellor's Awards celebrates teams and individuals who go above and beyond, making a real difference to our students, research, and the wider community.

Progress here means more than a job title; it’s about developing your potential, achieving meaningful goals, and being part of a professional network that drives the University forward. You’ll have the chance to shape your own career while playing a key role in the success of our students and colleagues.
