Spinout review

The University of Hertfordshire has become an early adopter of best practice guidelines from the Spinout Review.

The Government’s Independent Review of University Spinout Companies has laid down guidelines for best practice.

The University welcomed these guidelines and the Independent Review, and declared its support for the best practice guidelines, and making Herts an early adopter of them.

As part of its pro-innovation strategic approach, the University is committed to supporting the continuous development of best practice in the sector and welcomes the transparency and clarity provided by the published guidelines.

Herts also supports TENU’s University Spinout Investment Terms (USIT) Guides.

These guidelines are significant contributions to improving best practice around commercialisation and the creation and support of spinouts within the sector. Herts regards these as a strategic priority and central to our ambition to generate impact and support the development of innovation ecosystems.

Herts already meets many of the recommendations put forward by the spinout review and the USIT guides, including those related to equity splits, and is intent on continuing to develop its policies, processes, and support systems, as well as adopting and helping set best practice.

As part of this commitment, the University is currently undertaking a review of its IP policy which should enable further improvements and ensure Herts remains at the forefront of best practice in the sector.
