Fabrication Labs (‘Fab Labs’)

We offer four high-spec fabrication labs (‘Fab Labs’) in our physics, engineering and computer science building Spectra. Open to all students, each lab supports hands-on learning, innovation and research, offering specialist equipment and flexible access to help bring every innovation to life from prototyping to advanced electronics.

Both undergraduate and postgraduate students can use the Fab Labs, either via walk-in access or booking the required equipment. Each lab is tailored to support unique stages and types of design, prototyping and fabrication.

On the first floor, Fab Lab 1 provides a spacious area for general fabrication. It’s equipped with hand tools, laser cutters, a large water jet cutter and materials for drilling, cutting, gluing and fastening ideal for building physical prototypes and testing ideas.

Fab Lab 2, on the second floor, focuses on electrical and electronic projects and is conveniently located near the electronics and telecommunications labs. Inside, you’ll find soldering and rework stations, a PCB milling machine and microcontroller components. This lab supports circuit board production and hands-on experimentation with electronic systems.

Fab Lab 3, on the third floor, offers a wide range of 3D printing technologies. Students can print with resin, plastics and carbon fiber, enabling high-quality prototyping and design iteration.

Fab Lab 4, on the fourth floor, serves as a research space and overflow lab. It includes many of the tools found in the other labs laser cutters, 3D printers and drilling equipment making it a versatile space for advanced projects and collaborative work.
