Bayfordbury Observatory

The University of Hertfordshire's Bayfordbury Observatory supports live atmospheric and astronomical research using LiDAR, GNSS, polarimeters, and all sky imaging across a dedicated outdoor remote sensing site.

Students work alongside active research, collecting continuous measurements of clouds, aerosols, radiation, and sky conditions. They handle real datasets, run observations on site, and access selected instruments remotely from the College Lane Campus.

The observatory brings together a Cimel CE 370‑2 micropulse LiDAR, solar and lunar photometers comprising part of NASA’s AERONET network, polarimeters, GNSS meteorology systems, infrared radiometers, Nubiscope sky scanners, particle sensors, electric field mills, and day‑ and night‑time all‑sky cameras.

By learning within a working observatory rather than a simulated setting, students experience how long‑term monitoring, instrument capability, and environmental conditions shape real atmospheric and astronomical research practice.
