Life at Herts

After a long and successful career in finance, Patsy reached a turning point. She had led multiple teams and handled high levels of responsibility, but felt it was time to complement her practical knowledge with academic theory. That led her to the University of Hertfordshire, where she joined the Leadership and Professional Development course as a mature student at the age of 50.

What attracted her most was how the course was tailored for experienced professionals who had spent years working in leadership roles. ‘It was aimed at those who had already spent some time working and had accumulated many years in a professional environment. The course fees fitted my budget, and most importantly, the course took place on Saturdays.’

At first, returning to academia was a challenge. Having been away from academic study for many years, she found the transition from corporate to academic writing particularly tough. But with the guidance of her tutors, she persevered. ‘It took me some time to switch from 'corporate' writing to academic writing. I remember having conversations with my tutor, Dave Griffith, and unpicking feedback on a particular assignment when the penny dropped. It was amazing, and I am very grateful for their time, enthusiasm, and patience during the course.’

Career success

Now working as a Finance Manager, Patsy plays a key role in ensuring both internal efficiency and external guest satisfaction. ‘My role is to ensure the team has a clear vision and purpose aligned with the overall business strategy. Navigate challenges to ensure we deliver a great service not only to our team but to our guests.’

Her professional achievements have also inspired her educational ambitions. ‘Being a mature student then encouraged me to continue my studies, and I went on to achieve a master’s degree.’

Advice for future students

Patsy believes timing is everything when it comes to learning. ‘Don’t feel pressured to study at a time that is not right for you just because others are doing it. Anyone can learn and go to university at any age.’

She is a proud example of lifelong learning in action. ‘I started my LEAP degree at 50 years young, and while having some challenging situations, I achieved a first-class pass. I enjoyed my time so much, I then went on to complete a master’s degree in executive leadership and management, graduating at 57 years old. Age is just a number.’

As a black woman and mature student, a demographic underrepresented in senior leadership, Patsy continues to break barriers and inspire others to follow their path, in their own time.
