From blogger to marketing leader in the tech industry

Nicole Breeden’s journey from university student to marketing manager is a story of adaptability, ambition, and creative thinking. After graduating from the University of Hertfordshire in 2015 with a degree in English Language & Communication with Media & Journalism, Nicole has built a thriving career at Symetri, a company that delivers technology and consultancy services to the architectural, engineering, and construction sectors.

Joining Symetri as a marketing assistant, Nicole steadily worked her way up and now leads a team of three within the UK division. She is also part of a wider international team spanning the Nordics, Ireland, and the US. A key highlight of her role has been launching and co-hosting the Smarter Building podcast, a platform that reflects both her marketing expertise and creative roots. 'I helped create the podcast and now lead the marketing for it. It’s a perfect mix of content strategy, storytelling, and thought leadership.'

A diverse and supportive student experience

Nicole reflects on the inclusive and vibrant atmosphere at Herts. She says 'There was such a mix of people on my course, mature students, international students, people from all over the UK. It helped shape how I communicate and collaborate with others, especially now that I work in a global environment.'

She credits Herts with helping her find that direction, too. 'What I loved most about my course was how broad it was. I didn’t know exactly what I wanted to do, and the combination of English, media, and journalism gave me space to figure it out.'
One of her favourite memories? 'Writing about my nights at The Forum on my blog. While others went out to party, I turned it into content! We had some great acts perform, like Dizzee Rascal and Becky Hill.'

Advice to students

Her advice to students now is clear and empowering: ‘Work hard, but don’t stress about knowing exactly what you want to do right away. Ignore imposter syndrome. And most importantly, network and talk to everyone you can.’
