From campus to the F1 circuit
Since graduating from Herts, Jules Brumby has carved out a remarkable career in the world of elite sport and musculoskeletal health. Her physiotherapy journey began with roles at the English Institute of Sport, providing services to Olympians and elite British athletes. This experience at the highest levels of performance medicine set the stage for the next chapter of her career, twelve years working as a Clinical Specialist for the Ministry of Defence (MOD). There, she provided assessment clinics, diagnostic musculoskeletal ultrasound, and guided injection therapy, building expertise in both complex injuries and innovative treatment techniques.
More recently, Jules has established and run her own Sports Injury Clinic in Suffolk, offering specialist physiotherapy services to the local community. Alongside this, she has achieved one of the most exciting and high-profile roles in the field, contracting as a physiotherapist for the McLaren F1 Race Team over the past three seasons. Supporting world-class drivers and team members in the fast-paced world of motorsport has brought her passion for performance and precision full circle.
How Herts shaped the journey
Reflecting on her time at Herts, she describes how the variety and depth of her clinical placements played a vital role in preparing her for such a diverse and high-achieving career. ‘Insight into many different areas of physiotherapy through varied clinical placements helped shape my understanding of the field, and going into my early job roles, I had the advantage of the Physio course’s reputation going ahead of me’.
Her decision to study at Herts was inspired by the university’s forward-looking approach and modern facilities. ‘It was a newly established course with great facilities,’ she says. ‘The variety of placements offered in and around London counted for valuable experience. I loved the small cohort in 1995, which facilitated a personal approach.’
She also remembers the campus experience with fondness, describing it as a time that fostered close friendships and a strong sense of community. ‘A campus university meant a closer bond with fellow students,’ she reflects. The combination of academic challenge, professional exposure, and personal connection gave her the foundation and confidence to pursue ambitious roles throughout her career.
Looking ahead and giving back
As her career continues to evolve, she remains focused on growth, teaching, and sharing her expertise with the next generation of physiotherapists. ‘To expand my own clinic and offer student placements, to continue contracting for F1, and to move towards teaching.’
Her advice to current students is to ‘Aim for as much variety in post-graduate experience as possible to help you decide which speciality you wish to head towards.’
From working with Olympians and soldiers to supporting one of the most iconic racing teams in the world, her journey reflects not only professional excellence but also what began as a new launched course with a small, close-knit cohort that has led to a career defined by innovation, adaptability, and an unwavering commitment to helping others perform at their best, on and off the track.
