Gurmeet is a BSc (Hons) Computer Science graduate and the founder of Things Web, a tech company tackling real-world problems with smart IoT solutions. Their main product is a smart refrigeration monitoring system that helps restaurants, hotels, supermarkets, and cold chain distributors monitor fridge and freezer temperatures in real-time. In his words, Gurmeet's time at Herts 'gave me the skills and confidence to turn ideas into solutions'.
Gurmeet was drawn to the University because of its strong reputation in engineering and computer science and its welcoming campus environment. Some of his best memories were the late nights he spent working on group projects, meeting people from across the globe, and the 'buzz' of campus events.
Launching Things Web
With support from the University's Enterprise team, Gurmeet was able to refine his business idea and understand what he needed to do before launching it. He adds, 'The Enterprise team told me about useful workshops and networking opportunities that boosted my entrepreneurial knowledge and confidence.'
Gurmeet wants to grow Things Web into a leading name in smart monitoring systems, focusing on the food and hospitality industry. 'I want to expand into other sectors, too, like healthcare and logistics. I'm passionate about sustainability and want to keep building tech that reduces waste and lowers environmental impact.'
Gurmeet and Things Web won two awards at Flare 2025, the University's flagship enterprise and business idea competition. Alongside winning the Trading Business and Engineers in Business Fellowship awards, he received £3,500 in funding to develop Things Web.
Gurmeet's business has also received additional support worth £3,000 from the University's Fast Track Funding programme. The programme offers financial support to enterprising students and recent graduates developing their business ideas or growing an existing venture.
His advice
Gurmeet says not to wait for the 'perfect' idea or job. 'Start exploring early, get hands-on, and learn by doing.
'Take full advantage of the resources available at Herts. Don't be afraid to ask questions and try new things. Join a society, start a side project, and network with lecturers and graduates.'
