From Herts to health care

For Aisha, choosing a career in nursing wasn’t just a professional decision; it was a calling. Drawn to mental health care and committed to supporting others at their most vulnerable, she found both purpose and belonging through her studies at the University of Hertfordshire.

She now works as a Community Psychiatric Nurse at Hertfordshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, a role that blends empathy, clinical expertise, and teamwork. ‘I joined the Trust shortly after becoming a registered mental health nurse with the NMC, and it has been a deeply rewarding experience. My role involves supporting service users in the community with mental health needs and working collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams to promote recovery and well-being.’

More than a degree

For Aisha, studying at Herts was transformative. ‘My time at Herts gave me more than just a degree; it gave me direction and a supportive network. It sharpened both my clinical skills and my ability to lead, communicate, and advocate for service users.’

She actively sought opportunities beyond lectures; co-hosting podcasts, serving as a student ambassador, and taking on leadership roles. ‘These experiences helped me grow in confidence, build a sense of community, and develop strong public speaking and communication skills; all of which continue to serve me in my nursing career.’

Aisha’s academic achievements include the University Prize for top performance in her cohort and the prestigious Gold Go Herts Award, recognising her outstanding contributions. ‘Walking across the stage to receive them was a surreal and emotional experience. It served as a powerful reminder that hard work truly pays off, and it continues to motivate me today.’

Looking ahead

Aisha’s long-term goal is to shape the future of nursing as an educator and mentor. ‘My ambition is to become a nursing educator who not only imparts clinical knowledge but also inspires compassion, critical thinking, and innovation.’

She hopes to contribute to curriculum development, lead impactful research, and support students as they grow into confident healthcare professionals. ‘I chose nursing because I have always felt drawn to caring for others, particularly those facing mental health challenges. What I loved most about the course was how it balanced theoretical knowledge with practical experience.’

A defining moment came during her final placement, ‘As I was leaving, I said goodbye to one of the service users I had supported for weeks. He was moved to tears and said, ‘I never knew you were a student. That moment reinforced for me that empathy, presence, and consistency matter more than titles, and that I was truly ready for the role.’

For Aisha, Herts offered a mix of academics, clinical placements, and a strong sense of community. ‘It was the combination of practical learning, strong academic support, and the international student community that made Herts stand out. The state-of-the-art facilities and inspiring teaching staff made it an easy choice.’ She especially valued the university’s focus on diversity and holistic care values that align closely with her own.

Giving back

Now a practicing nurse, Aisha is passionate about mentoring others. ‘I mentor students to help them juggle and prioritise academics, placements, and family life. It is incredibly fulfilling to be part of someone else’s growth and to watch them gain confidence on their journey.’

She encourages students to be curious and proactive: ‘Get involved with initiatives, take on leadership roles, ask questions, and learn from both your successes and mistakes. Nursing is such a vast field; you might enter with one idea and leave with a passion you never knew you had.’
