What it takes to succeed in the fast-moving world of space technology
The technology helping us explore space, connect communities and navigate the world is evolving at a remarkable pace. For University of Hertfordshire graduate Jeremy Kimmons, being part of that journey is what makes every day exciting.
After graduating from Herts with a degree in Aerospace Engineering with Space Technology in 2020, Jeremy has built a career at Airbus Defence and Space, contributing to projects that push the boundaries of what's possible – from pioneering aircraft operating in the stratosphere to major commercial and government space programmes.
It's an industry where innovation never stands still.
"The defence and space sector is at the forefront of pushing the boundaries with technological innovations," says Jeremy. "The constant drive for change is probably the most exciting aspect of working in the industry."
His own journey began on the Zephyr programme, a groundbreaking high-altitude pseudo-satellite capable of operating in the stratosphere for extended periods. Starting as an intern, Jeremy quickly found himself working on projects that sit at the cutting edge of aerospace technology.
Today, he works within Airbus' space systems division, helping deliver complex programmes for customers around the world. Yet despite the scale and sophistication of the technology, Jeremy believes success in the sector comes down to something surprisingly simple: a willingness to keep learning.
"My degree at Herts gave me the toolset that's needed to thrive in industry," he explains. "You're taught how to learn, how to research, how to look things up for yourself and how to be independent in seeking knowledge. That's what life is all about."
It's a mindset he developed during his time at Herts, where supportive lecturers and tutors helped nurture both his technical skills and his curiosity.
"I was lucky to have really supportive mentors and coaches in the lecturers and professors that I had," he says. "Whether it was staying after a lecture to ask questions or discussing ideas with a personal tutor or project tutor, I always felt supported during my time at Herts."
Jeremy is also encouraged by how the University continues to invest in the next generation of engineers. The new Spectra Building will bring together engineering, physics and computer science students and researchers in a collaborative environment designed to spark innovation and solve real-world challenges.
For students considering a career in engineering or space technology, Jeremy’s advice is: “to embrace curiosity and never stop asking questions.”
“After all, the technologies shaping tomorrow's world won't be created by people who already have all the answers,” he finishes. “They'll be built by those willing to keep searching for them.”
