University of Hertfordshire signs UNISON Anti-Racism Charter

The University of Hertfordshire has formally signed UNISON’s Anti-Racism Charter, marking a further step in its commitment to building an inclusive and equitable environment for staff and students.

The UK's largest trade union and one of the recognised unions at the University, UNISON developed the charter alongside Black workers across its Eastern Region and partner trade unions. It sets out practical commitments to help organisations challenge racism, address inequality and create workplaces where everyone feels respected, supported and able to thrive.

The charter also encourages organisations to strengthen race equality policies, provide anti-racism training, monitor progress and support the wellbeing of staff who experience racism.

The signing builds on the University's wider work to advance equality, diversity and inclusion and reflects its ambition to promote a culture where people from all backgrounds can succeed and feel a genuine sense of belonging.

Professor Anthony Woodman, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Hertfordshire, said:

“Universities should be places where talent, ambition and potential are celebrated, regardless of background. By signing UNISON’s Anti-Racism Charter, we are making a clear statement that racism has no place in our community and reaffirming our commitment to creating an environment where everyone feels they belong.

“We know that instilling an inclusive culture requires more than good intentions. It demands action, accountability and a willingness to listen and learn. This charter provides an important framework to help guide that work.

“Our students and staff come from a rich diversity of cultures, experiences and perspectives, and that diversity is one of our greatest strengths. We are proud to sign this charter and to continue working together to build a university that is fairer, more inclusive and full of opportunity for all.”

UNISON University of Hertfordshire branch secretary Lisa Toon said:

“It’s brilliant that the university has signed UNISON’s Anti-Racism Charter and sent a crystal-clear message that racism will not be tolerated on campus.

“This doesn’t just benefit university workers, by fostering an inclusive and supportive environment, staff are in a better position to provide the best service possible to students and the wider community.”

Dr Melanie Crofts, Associate Professor and Head of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion at the University of Hertfordshire, said:

“Signing the UNISON Anti-Racism Charter reinforces our commitment to moving beyond statements of intent and embedding anti-racist practice across the University. It complements the work already underway through our Race Equality Charter, our developing EDI Strategy and our wider partnership with staff, students and trade unions. Achieving race equity is an ongoing journey, and this charter provides another important framework to help us listen, learn and drive meaningful, lasting change.”

The University will continue to work with staff networks, trade unions and students to ensure the commitments set out in the charter translate into meaningful action and lasting change across the institution.
