Professor Irene Ctori, Dean of the School of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences at the University of Hertfordshire, has attended this year’s first Royal Garden Party at Buckingham Palace in recognition of her contribution to professional practice and community life.

Invited in her role as Vice President of the College of Optometrists, Professor Ctori joined guests on Wednesday, 6 May from across the UK who have made a positive impact in their professions and communities. Hosted by King Charles III and Queen Camilla, the Garden Party is part of a long‑standing royal tradition celebrating public service.

Reflecting on the occasion, Professor Ctori said: “Last week I had the privilege of attending the Royal Garden Party at Buckingham Palace, having been invited in my role as Vice President of the College of Optometrists. Garden Parties are held to recognise and thank those who have made a positive impact in their communities and professions, through nominations by colleagues and professional networks. It was therefore a particularly meaningful occasion to attend.”

This was the first of three Royal Garden Parties being held this year. Guests are nominated through a national network of sponsors, and invitations cannot be requested. The event begins with the arrival of the Royal Family and the national anthem, followed by music, informal conversations with guests, afternoon tea and the opportunity to explore the Palace gardens.

Professor Ctori’s invitation reflects her wider leadership across health education, professional practice and public engagement, and highlights the vital role universities play in supporting and serving communities at both local and national level.

She added: “The weather thankfully held out, the gardens were beautiful, and the afternoon tea certainly lived up to expectations. Most of all, it was a moment to pause and reflect on the people, teams, students, colleagues and communities I have had the opportunity to work alongside throughout my career.”
