How Clearing helped Maddy turn a classroom passion into a teaching career
Two years working as a special educational needs teaching assistant sparked something in Maddison (Maddy) Risley: a love of helping children learn and thrive.
But despite discovering a passion for teaching, Maddy hadn't planned on going to university. Having completed her A Levels during the pandemic, higher education felt like a path she'd missed. It was only when she realised her classroom experience could lead to a lifelong career that she decided to take the next step and become a teacher.
Determined to start as soon as possible, Maddy applied through Clearing to study a degree with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) at the University of Hertfordshire.
"My best friend had just finished the course at Herts and encouraged me to attend the last Open Day and apply," she said. "I went along and absolutely fell in love with it. I also found the Clearing process very straightforward, with guidance from different members of the Clearing team and step-by-step support throughout."
Although Maddy fell slightly below the advertised UCAS points requirement, the University looked beyond grades alone. Taking into account her professional experience, commitment and enthusiasm for teaching, Herts was able to offer her a place.
Now one year into her course, Maddy is thriving and says the support she received from the moment she applied helped ease her concerns about returning to education.
"I've loved my first year," she said. "Everyone has been so welcoming and supportive, which really helped me settle in."
For anyone considering applying through Clearing, Maddy has a simple message: "Go for it. Attend an Open Day, speak to the Clearing team and ask questions. I felt supported every step of the way, and Clearing gave me the opportunity to start working towards the career I've always wanted."
