University’s innovative ‘Parole Clinic’ recognised at prestigious national awards

The University of Hertfordshire’s innovative new Parole Clinic has been highly commended at the 2025 LawWorks and Attorney General’s Student Pro Bono Awards, celebrating its exceptional contribution to pro bono legal work and access to justice.
Held at the House of Lords on 23 April, the annual awards, supported by the Attorney General, the Rt Hon. Lord Hermer KC, honour outstanding pro bono activities undertaken by law students and law educators across the UK. This year’s competition attracted an impressive range of nominations, reflecting the strength of commitment to community impact from across the legal education sector.
The University of Hertfordshire’s Parole Clinic, which provides crucial support to prisoners at HMP The Mount navigating the parole process, stood out for its innovative and compassionate approach. The Clinic empowers students to work directly with prisoners, supervised by Prison Law solicitor, Harjit Chana from Wells Burcombe Solicitors, offering them invaluable experience while helping some of the most marginalised individuals in the justice system.
"The students’ dedication, professionalism and sensitivity in dealing with vulnerable clients is extraordinary," said Amanda Thurston, Director of Hertfordshire Law Clinic. "This recognition is a testament to their hard work, and the University’s commitment to real-world legal education that makes a tangible difference."
The Clinic has grown significantly since its inception and is now an integral part of the University's wider pro bono programme. Law students receive training and supervision by Harjit as they support parole applicants with written representations, dossier reviews, and preparation for hearings. These are skills that not only prepare them for their careers but provide life-changing support to their clients.
Chintankumar Parmar, University of Hertfordshire, was also shortlisted for the Best Contribution by an Individual Student category. Other winners included projects addressing racial justice, legal education for schoolchildren, and support for Windrush claimants.
This national commendation places the University of Hertfordshire firmly among the leaders in student-led legal support, showcasing students' commitment to justice and the University's focus on applied, socially conscious education.
