Held on Wednesday evening (5 November) at the Weston Auditorium on the University’s De Havilland campus, the ceremony welcomed distinguished guests from across the region and beyond, including the Deputy Lieutenant Dawid Konotey-Ahulu CBE DL, representing the Lord Lieutenant of Hertfordshire Robert Voss, CBE CStJ, academics and alumni.

The event celebrated the beginning of a new chapter for the University, led by two exceptional figures whose careers reflect the University’s core mission of driving opportunities that lead to positive outcomes regionally, nationally and globally.

A pioneering force in the legal profession and a passionate advocate for equity and diversity, Professor Ononiwu has held a vast number of senior roles throughout her career, including as the current and first ever Director General Legal Delivery for the Crown Prosecution Service. Her appointment as Chancellor strengthens the University’s connection to its alumni and the wider community it serves.

Speaking at the ceremony, Professor Ononiwu, Chancellor of the University of Hertfordshire, said:

“I have carried the values of this institution - fairness, integrity, and a commitment to serving others – with me all the way through my career. And now, to be able to return in this new capacity – as its Chancellor – is not only a personal honour, but a profound reminder of the power of education to really change lives.

“This university will always have a special place in my heart. It shaped me, and I feel very lucky to now have the opportunity to help shape its future too. I look forward to working alongside everyone here at Herts to champion our values, celebrate our achievements and empower the next generation of leaders, thinkers, and changemakers.”

Professor Anthony Woodman, appointed Vice-Chancellor in September, brings a distinguished background in translational medicine, research leadership, and strategic development in higher education. His career spans academia and enterprise, with a focus on student success, inclusive education and the transformative power of research to improve lives.

Professor Anthony Woodman, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Hertfordshire, said:

“It is an immense honour to be entrusted with the role of Vice-Chancellor at the University of Hertfordshire. I’m deeply grateful for the warmth and generosity shown to me during this evening’s investiture - it’s a reflection of the spirit that makes Herts so special. To join a university so rooted in purpose, ambition and community is a privilege, and I’m proud to stand alongside colleagues, students and partners who are truly shaping the future.”

Speaking at the ceremony, David Sproul, Pro-Chancellor and Chair of the Board of Governors, said:

“This evening’s investiture is a celebration of leadership, legacy and the values that define our University. Professor Ononiwu’s return to her former University as Chancellor is a powerful testament to the enduring impact of education and the deep bonds between our graduates and their alma mater. Her achievements inspire us all. Equally, Professor Woodman’s appointment as Vice-Chancellor marks a bold step forward for Hertfordshire – his vision and experience will guide us as we continue to empower students, drive innovation and make a meaningful difference in the world.”

The investiture ceremony included formal resolutions of appointment – with both the new Chancellor and Vice-Chancellor presented with a certificate of appointment – alongside musical performances and reflections on the University’s mission and future. Watch highlights from the event here.
