University of Hertfordshire scores long-term partnership with Watford FC to boost student opportunities
Following a successful first year, the renewed partnership will continue to build upon the combined power of education and sport to offer a wide range of opportunities designed to enhance student learning, career readiness, and community impact.
From internships, apprenticeships, and work placements at Watford FC and collaborative research across the University in sport science, nutrition, performance analysis, as well as opportunities for students studying relevant subjects – such as fashion, civil engineering and IT – to work with the club on major projects, the partnership will ensure Herts students are provided with direct access to industry experience and professional networks.
Students will also benefit from Industry Days, guest lectures, and campus visits from Watford FC players, while the University of Hertfordshire’s logo will be featured on Watford FC shirts and across branding at the club’s training grounds and stadium.
In addition, players transitioning out of the Watford FC Academy will have access to Herts’ developing elite men’s football programme, which will provide athletes with education, career development and long-term opportunities beyond the pitch.
Professor Anthony Woodman, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Hertfordshire, said:
“We’re extremely proud and thrilled to continue our partnership with Watford FC. This collaboration offers our students unparalleled access to professional environments, supports impactful research, and strengthens our role in the community. It’s a true example of how bringing the world of professional sport directly into the academic environment can create extensive and lasting value.”
As an official supporter of the Watford FC Community Sports and Education Trust, the University will also continue to play an active role in outreach initiatives such as The Positive Minds project – a wellbeing programme designed to support Year 6 students during their transition to secondary school by promoting mental health awareness and resilience – plus other initiatives promoting wellbeing, inclusion, and social mobility.
Paul O’Brien, Watford FC’s Commercial Director, added:
“The University of Hertfordshire has been an exceptional partner. Together, we’ve built a relationship that empowers students, supports innovation, and makes a real difference in our community.
I’d like to extend my sincere thanks to everyone at the University of Hertfordshire for their incredible hard work and support throughout our first year. The enthusiasm and engagement from both students and staff have been exceptional, and I’m absolutely delighted that we’ll be continuing this partnership for another three years”.
