Clearing is now open to applicants who already have their results - such as mature students, career changers, or those returning after a gap year - allowing them to secure a place ahead of A-level results day on 14 August. Students awaiting their results can also use this time to research courses and be ready to act quickly when their grades are released.

The University’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Mairi Watson, encouraged early engagement with the process:

“Just over a fifth of our Clearing applications last year came in before A-level results day. Independent data shows a growing trend of students using Clearing strategically - researching options early or applying directly for a place.

“My advice is to explore what’s available - you might be surprised by the range of courses that could be the perfect fit for your goals.”

Recent UCAS insight confirms this shift, with more students choosing Clearing as a proactive route rather than a last-minute option. Direct-to-Clearing applications are rising with a third of students applying to university for the first time through Clearing.*

Courses that typically attract early Clearing applicants include physiotherapy, business and computer science, all of which are popular at Herts for their strong career outcomes and practical learning focus.

Professor Watson added:

“Choosing a university is about more than just the course, it’s about finding a place where you’ll feel supported, valued, and inspired. I always encourage students to look at independent satisfaction ratings and speak to current students to get a real sense of the experience.”

Potential pupils can speak online to one of the University’s current students (known as UniBuddy) available on every course page.

The University of Hertfordshire’s overall student positivity this year rose to 85%, up 2% from 2024, and ahead of the sector average of 83.6% (the National Student Survey 2025).

93% of Herts graduates are in employment or further study within 15 months of completing their degree (Graduate Outcomes).

In the 2025 Whatuni Student Choice Awards (the largest annual awards in the UK where the outcome is decided purely by students) Herts was ranked 12th overall, 4th for student support, and 6th both for facilities and for lectures and teaching quality.

Apply online through Clearing or speak directly with the University’s Clearing advisors on the hotline: 0330 404 0058.
