University of Hertfordshire history Professor appointed Chair of national academic framework

The University of Hertfordshire is delighted to announce the appointment of Professor Jonathan Morris as Chair of the History Sub-Panel for the upcoming national Research Excellence Framework (REF), the UK’s system for assessing the quality of research in higher education institutions. Professor Morris, the Director, Research Culture and Environment at Hertfordshire, will play a key role as one of only four chairs from post-1992 universities to be appointed across the 34 REF 2029 sub-panels, reflecting both his academic distinction and the University’s prominence in research leadership.
The REF 2029 sub-panel chairs will lead Units of Assessment through the criteria-setting phase beginning later this year and onward to the final research assessment. This work will shape how excellence in research is defined and evaluated, ensuring a rigorous, fair, and inclusive process.
Deputy chairs have been confirmed for most sub-panels; the Deputy Chair for History is currently in the final stages of approval to be announced in due course.
