Lord Salisbury to step down as Chancellor of the University of Hertfordshire
Robert Gascoyne-Cecil, 7th Marquess of Salisbury, has served the University with distinction for nearly two decades, bringing a wealth of experience from a prestigious career in public service, politics, and philanthropy. Educated at Eton College and Christ Church, Oxford, Lord Salisbury began his career in banking before entering Parliament as MP for South Dorset in 1979. He later held senior roles in the House of Lords, including Leader of the House and Lord Privy Seal, and was Leader of the Opposition in the Lords from 1997 to 1998.
Beyond politics, Lord Salisbury has been deeply involved in charitable and cultural organisations, including serving as Chairman of the Thames Diamond Jubilee Foundation, and being honoured as a Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order and a Knight of the Garter.
Lord Salisbury said: “It has been a great honour to have served as Chancellor of the University of Hertfordshire for so long and I leave with many happy memories. Above all, I shall remember the remarkable contributions the University has made, both to its core missions of teaching and research, and to community life in our county as an employer and as a leader. I have always enjoyed my contacts with the University’s staff and students and hope that, after my retirement, these contacts will continue.
“Higher Education is one of the glories of our country, yet today it faces challenges. Nevertheless, I know our University will continue to flourish and I wish it every success as it helps to shape our future.”
Professor Quintin McKellar CBE, who is about to retire from the University of Hertfordshire after 14 years as Vice-Chancellor - during which time he worked closely alongside Lord Salisbury - said:
“Lord Salisbury has been a tireless advocate for the University’s mission, supporting its growth, student success, and community engagement. His departure marks the end of an era, and the University extends its deepest gratitude for his dedicated service.
“On a personal note, I am immensely grateful for Lord Salisbury’s unwavering commitment and the genuine passion he has shown for our Herts community. He has been a great friend to us all, and his wisdom, warmth and generosity have made a lasting impact. I consider it a huge privilege to have worked alongside him and wish him all the best with his future endeavours and continued contributions to public life.”
Details about the University of Hertfordshire’s Chancellor succession plans will be announced soon.
