Herts’ Vice Chancellor’s final lecture and new book celebrate the power of higher education

As he prepares to step down after more than 14 years of leadership at the University of Hertfordshire, Professor Quintin McKellar CBE is marking the occasion with the publication of a new book and delivery of a final lecture, both celebrating the profound impact of higher education.
Sharing the same title: A Compelling Case for Universities: Gaudeamus Igitur – So Let Us Rejoice, the lecture - taking place at the Hatfield-based University on Tuesday 8 July - and the book, present a passionate and timely defence of the vital role universities play in society.
Drawing on over 40 years in academia, research, and university leadership, Professor McKellar’s book explores how universities serve as engines of innovation, social mobility, and global collaboration. The title, referencing the Latin hymn Gaudeamus Igitur (“So Let Us Rejoice”), reflects the book’s dual tone: celebratory and urgent.
In the book, Professor McKellar argues that universities are not just educational institutions, but vital contributors to national growth and prosperity, international diplomacy, and societal wellbeing. His reflections are informed by his leadership at the University of Hertfordshire – a leading modern UK university - and his broader contributions to the sector.
The upcoming lecture will offer a personal and professional reflection on Professor McKellar’s career and the challenges and opportunities facing higher education today. Echoing the themes of the book, he will highlight the importance of internationalism, research excellence, and long-term policy thinking.
Professor Quintin McKeller, Vice Chancellor of the University of Hertfordshire and author of A Compelling Case for Universities: Gaudeamus Igitur – So Let Us Rejoice, said:
"UK universities stand at a defining crossroads, facing mounting funding pressures, evolving immigration policies, and intensifying global competition. As knowledge and the world of work transform at an unprecedented pace - perhaps more rapidly than at any point in history - our universities must rise to the challenge of equipping graduates with the knowledge, skills, behaviours, and attributes needed to thrive in both today’s and tomorrow’s world. I have every confidence they are more than capable of doing so.
“Universities are extraordinary institutions. They anchor our communities, enrich human potential, drive economic growth, and shape our cultural landscape. Higher education also remains one of the most powerful tools for overcoming social, cultural, and economic barriers - and it must remain accessible to all who seek its benefits. My hope is that this book and lecture will inspire a renewed commitment to the mission of higher education, reminding us all - regardless of background - of the immense value and unique opportunities it offers to those who fully engage with it."
